Overview - Valve Train, 1.8L Engine

Exhaust Valve
- Do not rework, only lapping is permitted
- Valve Dimensions. Refer to VALVE GUIDES, CHECKING .
- Valve Guides, Checking. Refer to VALVE GUIDES, CHECKING .
Cylinder Head
Valve Guide
- Checking. Refer to VALVE GUIDES, CHECKING .
Valve Stem Seal
- Replacing. Refer to VALVE STEM SEALS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Valve Spring
Valve Spring Retainer
Valve Retainers
Hydraulic Lifter
- With roller rocker lever
- Do not interchange
- Lubricate the contact surface
Exhaust Camshaft
- Removing and installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, 1.8L ENGINE
- Check the radial clearance using Plastigauge^® (roller rocker lever removed)
- Radial clearance: 0.024 to 0.066 mm
- Run-out: maximum 0.04 mm
Cylinder Head Cover
- With integrated camshaft bearings
- Removing and installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, 1.8L ENGINE
- Clean the sealing surface, reworking is not permitted.
- Remove old sealant residue.
- Only replace together with the cylinder head
Bolt
- Tightening specification and sequence. Refer to Fig 3.
- Always replace after removing
- Loosening. Refer to Fig 2.
O-ring
- Always replace after removing
- Lubricate with engine oil
Plug
Intake Camshaft
- Removing and installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, 1.8L ENGINE
- Check the radial clearance using Plastigauge^® (roller rocker lever removed)
- Radial clearance: 0.024 to 0.066 mm
- Run-out: maximum 0.04 mm
Cap
- Always replace after removing
- Removing: with the cylinder head cover installed, pierce through one side of the cover with an awl and pry it out
- Installing. Refer to Installing .
Intake Valve
- Do not rework, only lapping is permitted
- Valve Dimensions. Refer to VALVE GUIDES, CHECKING .
- Valve Guides, Checking. Refer to VALVE GUIDES, CHECKING .

-- Loosen the cylinder head cover in the sequence -1 through 6-.

-- Tighten the bolts in the steps shown in the sequence:

Step	Bolts	Tightening Specification/Additional Turn
1.	-1 to 6-	Install all the way in multiple steps by hand
2.	-1 to 6-	8 Nm
3.	-1 to 6-	90° additional turn

NOTE:

Make sure that the cylinder head cover is not tilted.
