Steering Arm, Measuring Mechanically

Special tools and workshop equipment required

-- First measure steering arm in "Guided Fault Finding " with Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

-- Connect Vehicle Diagnostic Tester and select troubleshooting using "Functions/Component selection" Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

"Chassis (Repair group 01; 40 - 49)"

"Chassis (Repair group 01; 45 - 47)"

"01 - On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems"

"ABS and ESP brake electronics"

"Electrical Components"

"G 85 steering arm measurement"

If result of measurement was outside if tolerance, measure steering arm mechanically.

-- With vehicles with air suspension, place vehicle on hoist, refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

-- Remove left boot from steering gear.

-- Turn steering out of center position toward right as far as stop.

-- Measure dimension -a- as shown in illustration.

Dimension -a- must be 144.6 mm.

NOTE:

If dimension -a- is not achieved, check whether version is same on left and right.

-- Remove right boot from steering gear.

-- Turn steering toward left as far as stop.

-- Measure the dimension between the steering gear and the tie rod/steering arm thrust ring hex fitting.

Dimension -a- must be the same in both measurements.
