Removal And Installation: Compressor: Overview
Mark connector to A/C Compressor Regulator Valve -N280- due to risk of interchange with connector to electric engine mount (for example, on a vehicle with an 8 cylinder FSI engine, if connectors are interchanged, no DTC is entered in DTC memory, however the evaporator may ice-up since the compressor is actuated continuously).
Compressor as replacement part has different oil fill capacities, therefore note the exact part number. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS (Compressor) . The reason for the different oil capacities in the compressor lies in the design of the compressor itself, note these oil capacities. Too much oil in the circuit leads to higher pressures and reduces cooling performance of the system. Too little oil may lead to lubrication problems in the compressor.
Depending on compressor type and design of refrigerant circuit (one or two evaporators), different refrigerant oil and refrigerant R134a capacities are designated for the refrigerant circuit. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS (Compressor) .
Removing the A/C compressor
-- Discharge refrigerant circuit. Refer to COMPRESSOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ON BRACKET .
-- Disconnect refrigerant lines from compressor, refer to COMPRESSOR REFRIGERANT LINES, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
-- Remove compressor from bracket (6 cylinder engine), refer to COMPRESSOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ON BRACKET .
-- Remove the A/C compressor, (8 cylinder FSI engine) refer to COMPRESSOR .
Install the A/C compressor.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order while noting the following:
Different compressors, depending on production time period and on engine, refer to COMPONENT OVERVIEW .
Coat the O-ring seals lightly with refrigerant oil prior to installation, refer to REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT O-RINGS .
Start engine only after reassembling refrigerant circuit and if possible only with refrigerant circuit charged.
Before installing the A/C compressor, refer to COMPRESSOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ON BRACKET
- Pay attention to the tightening specifications, refer to (6 cylinder) COMPRESSOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ON BRACKET , (8 Cylinder FSI) COMPRESSOR , and COMPRESSOR REFRIGERANT LINES, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
- Replace the O-ring seals on opened connection points, refer to REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT O-RINGS .
-- During and after installation of a new compressor or after adding fresh refrigerant oil to compressor on an already used compressor (for example, after flushing the refrigerant circuit), rotate compressor by hand approximately 10 rotations before installing belt or before tightening driveshaft to prevent compressor damage.
-- Following attachment, check routing of refrigerant pipes. They must be inserted in holders provided and not make contact with other components.
-- Install remaining components.
-- Evacuate and re-charge refrigerant circuit. Refer to REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT, SERVICING .
-- Operate the A/C system after filling the refrigerant circuit, refer to OPERATING AFTER FILLING REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT .
