Cylinder Heads, Removing And Installing: Removing

NOTE:

The following information describes how to remove both cylinder heads at the same time.

If only one cylinder head will be removed, follow the applicable instructions in the following description.

When installing, bring all cable ties back to same positions.

-- To remove the right cylinder head, remove the upper coolant pipe. Refer to UPPER COOLANT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the ribbed belt. Refer to RIBBED BELT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the intake manifold lower section. Refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD LOWER SECTION WITH FUEL RAIL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to LEFT CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , RIGHT CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Disconnect the left and right connectors -1, 2 and 3- from the fuel injectors.

NOTE:

Ignore item -4-.

-- Remove the affected camshaft timing chain from camshafts. Refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAINS, REMOVING FROM CAMSHAFTS .

-- Remove the Locking PinT40071 from the left cylinder head.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and then remove the chain tensioner on the right cylinder head.

NOTE:

The Locking PinT40071 remains installed.

-- Remove the bolts for the coolant pump ribbed belt pulley, using a Wrench - Pin Type3212 to counterhold.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and move the power steering pump to the side.

NOTE:

Ignore item -3 and arrow-.

-- Disconnect the connector -1- for the A/C Compressor Regulator Valve -N280-.

-- Remove the Ground (GND) wire bolt -2-.

-- Disconnect the connectors from the left cylinder head:

for Camshaft Position Sensor 2 -G163-

for Camshaft Adjustment Valve 2 -N208-

-- Move the electrical wiring harness to the side.

NOTE:

Ignore item -2 and arrows-.

-- Disconnect the connector -1- for the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor -G62-.

-- Remove the front coolant pipe bolts -arrows-.

-- Disconnect the connector -2-.

-- Remove the GND wire bolt -1-.

-- Disconnect the connectors from the right cylinder head:

  1. Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 -N205-
  2. Camshaft Position Sensor -G40-

-- Move the electrical wiring harness to the side.

NOTE:

Ignore -arrows-.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow- and remove the oil dipstick and guide tube.

-- Disconnect the connectors:

for Heated Oxygen Sensor -G39- (right)

NOTE:

Ignore items -3 and 4-.

-- Open the clamp -1- and remove the vacuum hose from the vacuum pump.

Only for Right Cylinder Head

-- Remove the upper coolant pipe. Refer to UPPER COOLANT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- on the rear of the cylinder head.

NOTE:

Depending on the version, there are different camshafts (with notches or without notches) and cylinder head bolts (with collar and without collar) installed.

Distinguishing characteristic:

Cylinder head bolts without a collar have a Polydrive wrench profile.

Cylinder head bolts with a collar have an internal multi-point wrench profile.

Camshafts with wrench clearance have notches -arrows-. The cylinder head bolts without a collar can be removed without further preliminary work. The cylinder head bolts with a collar cannot be removed without further preliminary work. The camshafts must be removed (refer to CAMSHAFTS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ) before the cylinder head bolts can be removed.

Camshafts without notches must be removed (refer to CAMSHAFTS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ) before the cylinder head bolts can be removed.

-- Remove the bolts, remove the cylinder head and place it on a soft surface (foam).
