Procedure

Engine oil temperature at least 30 °C (86 °F).
Battery voltage at least 12.5 V.

-- Remove all ignition coils. Refer to IGNITION COILS WITH POWER OUTPUT STAGES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Disconnect the left and right connectors on the back of the cylinder head -1- for the fuel injectors.

NOTE:

Ignore items -2 and 3-.

-- Remove spark plugs with Spark Plug Removal Tool3122B.

-- Check the compression using the Compression Tester KitVAG1763.

NOTE:

For information on using the tester. Refer to the Operating Instructions.

-- Have a second technician press the accelerator pedal down all the way while operating the starter until the pressure increase is no longer displayed on the tester.

-- Repeat procedure on each cylinder.

Compression Pressure	Pressure
New	11.0 to 14.0 bar (160 to 203 psi)
Wear limit	10.0 bar (145 psi)
Difference between cylinders	max. 3.0 bar (43.5 psi)

Assemble in reverse order of disassembling. Note the following:

-- Install the spark plugs. Refer to Maintenance, Diagnosis .

-- Install the ignition coil. Refer to IGNITION COILS WITH POWER OUTPUT STAGES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- If there are any faults stored in the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory that occurring during testing, erase them on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, Guided Functions , Check DTC Memory , then Generate Readiness Code .
