Camshaft Timing Chains, Removing From Camshafts: Removing
There is a risk of injury if the radiator fan turns on by itself.
- The radiator fans can come on even when the ignition is turned off, such as when heat builds up in the engine compartment.
The camshaft timing chains remain on the engine in the following description.
-- Remove the left and right timing chain covers. Refer to LEFT AND RIGHT TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to LEFT CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING for the left side and to RIGHT CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING for the right side.
-- Remove the front noise insulation -1-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Insert the Crankshaft SocketT40058 guide pins as follows:
- The large diameter -arrow 1- faces the engine.
- The small diameter -arrow 2- faces the adapter.
-- Rotate the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation -arrow- to Top Dead Center (TDC) using the Crankshaft SocketT40058 and wrench.
- The threaded holes -arrows- in the camshafts must face upward.
-- Install the Camshaft ClampT40133 in both cylinder heads and tighten bolts -arrows- to 25 Nm.
The cylinder head for cylinder bank 2 (left) is shown in the illustration.
-- Remove the locking bolt -arrow- for the "TDC" marking crankshaft from the cylinder block.
-- Install the Crankshaft Locking PinT40069 in the hole and tighten to 20 Nm. Rotate the crankshaft -1- back and forth slightly to center the pin completely, if necessary.
The chain tensioner for the camshaft timing chain is oil-dampened. Compress it by slowly applying constant pressure.
-- Press the left camshaft timing chain tensioner guide rails in as far as the stop using a screwdriver -1- and secure the chain tensioner with a Locking PinT40071.
-- Press the right camshaft timing chain tensioner guide rails in as far as the stop using a screwdriver -1- and secure the chain tensioner with a Locking PinT40071.
For Camshaft Adjusters with Three Notches
The camshafts can get damaged.
- Do not use the Camshaft ClampT40133 to counterhold when loosening the camshaft adjuster bolt or the camshaft sprocket.
-- To counterhold at the affected camshaft adjuster, position the Wrench - CamshaftT40269 with the Torque Wrench 1332 40-200NmVAG1332 and Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Open Ring Wrench - 24mmVAG1332/9 and loosen the bolt -2-.
Ignore item -1 and arrow-.
For Camshaft Adjusters with Four Notches
The camshafts can get damaged.
- Do not use the Camshaft ClampT40133 to counterhold when loosening the camshaft adjuster bolt or the camshaft sprocket.
-- To counterhold at the affected camshaft adjuster, position the Camshaft Adjuster KeyT40079 with the Torque Wrench 1332 40-200Nm VAG1332 and Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Open Ring Wrench - 24mmVAG1332/9 and loosen the bolt -2-.
Ignore item -1 and arrow-.
Continuation for All
-- To counterhold, place the Wrench - Pin Type3212 on the camshaft chain sprocket and loosen the bolt using the Multipoint SocketT10035.
Ignore item -1 and arrow-.
-- Mark the installation position of the camshaft adjuster and the camshaft chain sprocket in color for installing later.
Danger of causing damage to the engine.
- To prevent small parts from accidentally entering the engine through the opening in the timing chain compartment, cover the opening with a clean cloth.
-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- on the left side of the cylinder cover, then remove the camshaft adjuster and the camshaft chain sprocket.
-- Mark the installation position of the camshaft adjuster and the camshaft chain sprocket in color for installing later.
-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- on the right side of the cylinder cover, then remove the camshaft adjuster and the camshaft chain sprocket.
