Connecting Rod, Measuring Radial Clearance

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Plastigage®

Procedure

-- Remove connecting rod bearing caps.

-- Clean bearing caps and journals.

-- Place Plastigage® over entire width of bearing journal or into bearing shells.

-- Install connecting rod bearing cap and tighten to 60 Nm. Do not turn crankshaft.

-- Remove connecting rod bearing caps again.

-- Compare width of Plastigage® with measuring scale.

Radial clearance:

New: 0.020 to 0.069 mm.
Wear limit: 0.120 mm.

-- Replace bolts for connecting rod bearings.
