Overview - Muffler, Vehicles With Two Rear Mufflers

1. Gasket
   • Always replace
2. Heated Oxygen Sensor -G39- and Oxygen Sensor Heater -Z19-
   • Removing and installing. Refer to HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR -G39-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
3. Oxygen Sensor after Catalytic Converter -G130- and Heater for Oxygen Sensor 1 after Catalytic Converter -Z29-
   • Removing and installing. Refer to OXYGEN SENSOR AFTER CATALYTIC CONVERTER -G130-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
4. Catalytic Converter
   • Protect catalytic converter from shocks and impact stress
   • Removing and installing. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
   • Exhaust System, Installing without Tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
5. Front Muffler
   • With a coupling
   • Decoupling element must not be bent more than 10° - otherwise it may be damaged
   • Do not load decoupling element on cable
   • Do not damage wire mesh at decoupling element
   • Removing and installing. Refer to FRONT EXHAUST PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
   • Exhaust System, Installing without Tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
6. Front Clamping Sleeve
   • Before tightening, align the exhaust system without tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
   • Installation position. Refer to Fig 2.
   • Tighten the threaded connections evenly
7. Nut
   • 23 Nm
8. Center Muffler
   • Original equipment as one unit with rear mufflers. If a repair is required replace each separately
   • For removal, remove the diagonal braces. Refer to Fig 4
   • Separating point. Refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS, SEPARATING, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
   • Exhaust System, Installing without Tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
9. Left Rear Clamping Sleeve
   • For individual replacement of the center and rear mufflers
   • Installation position. Refer to Fig 3.
   • Before tightening, align the exhaust system without tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
   • Tighten threaded connections evenly.
10. Left Rear Muffler
    • Original equipment as one unit with center muffler and tailpipe
    • For removal, remove the diagonal braces. Refer to Fig 4
    • Replace the center mufflers, the rear muffler and the tail pipe individually
    • Separating point between the center and rear muffler. Refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS, SEPARATING, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
    • Separating point between the rear muffler and the tailpipe. Refer to TAIL PIPES, REPLACING, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
    • Exhaust System, Installing without Tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
11. Tail Pipe
    • Original equipment as one unit with the rear muffler. If a repair is required replace each separately
    • Separating point. Refer to TAIL PIPES, REPLACING, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
    • Aligning. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
12. Clamp
    • 23 Nm
13. Mount
    • Replace if damaged
    • Check the pretension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
14. Nut
    • 20 Nm
    • Always replace
15. Nut
    • 23 Nm
16. Right Rear Muffler
    • Original equipment as one unit with center muffler and tailpipe
    • For removal, remove the diagonal braces. Refer to Fig 4
    • Replace the center mufflers, the rear muffler and the tail pipe individually
    • Separating point between the center and rear muffler. Refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS, SEPARATING, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
    • Separating point between the rear muffler and the tailpipe. Refer to TAIL PIPES, REPLACING, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
    • Exhaust System, Installing without Tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
17. Right Rear Clamping Sleeve
    • Tighten threaded connections evenly.
    • For individual replacement of the center and rear mufflers
    • Installation position. Refer to Fig 3.
    • Before tightening, align the exhaust system without tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
18. Bolt
    • 20 Nm
    • Always replace
19. Mount
    • Replace if damaged
    • Check the pretension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING FREE OF TENSION, VEHICLES WITH TWO REAR MUFFLERS .
20. Seal
    • Always replace
21. Nut
    • 25 Nm
22. Nut
    • 40 Nm
    • Always replace
    • Coat turbocharger stud bolts with hot bolt paste.
    • Hot bolt paste.

Installed Position of the Front Clamping Sleeve

-- Install the clamping sleeve in the angle position shown.

• Threaded connections point toward the right
• The nuts face up
• α = approximately 20°

Installed Position of Rear Clamping Sleeve

-- Install the clamping sleeves so that the bolt ends do not project over lower edge of the clamping sleeves.

• Installation position: threaded connections forward.

Diagonal Braces

-- To remove, remove the diagonal braces for the center and rear mufflers -1 and 2-.

-- Install the diagonal braces. Refer to DIAGONAL BRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (A5 CABRIOLET) , DIAGONAL BRACE, SPORTBACK and DIAGONAL BRACE, CABRIOLET .
