Battery With Visual Indicator

CAUTION:

There is risk of explosion if the visual indicator is colorless or light yellow!

  • Do not jump start the vehicle.
  • Do not check or charge the battery.
  • Replace the battery.

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Tightening Specification Table for Installation: 

Component / Fastening Element [Nm]
Pressure reservoir nut 9

The battery is located in the luggage compartment under the luggage compartment floor.

Removal Procedures: 

-- Raise the luggage compartment floor covering and secure.

-- Applies to vehicles with air suspension ("adaptive air suspension"): Remove the nuts -arrows- and move the pressure reservoir with the lines -1- still attached and the solenoid valve block -2- to the side.

-- Remove the vehicle tool box.

   

Procedure: 

-- Check the battery housing for the following:

-- Replace damaged batteries.

-- Before checking the electrolyte level, carefully tap on the visual indicator -arrow- with the handle of a screwdriver.

-- Read the battery electrolyte level using the color display. Two different results are possible:

Color display on visual indicator: Action:
Black or green Battery electrolyte level is OK: no further action necessary.
Colorless or light yellow Battery electrolyte level too low: the battery must be replaced.

Installation procedures occur in reverse order. While doing so, note the tightening specifications. Refer to BATTERY WITH VISUAL INDICATOR  for the installation tightening specification table.

NOTE:

The visual indicator is also called the ALI (Acid Level Indicator).

Only use the visual indicator for assessing the electrolyte level!

Bubbles can build up under the visual indicator when the battery is charging and also while driving, causing the color display to be incorrect. Gently tapping on the visual indicator dissolves these bubbles.
