Gear Oil, Checking Level, Front Final Drive, Transmission With Separated Oil System: Notes
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler Kit :VAS6617
- :VAS6617/2
- :VAS6617/6
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit :SMN372500
- Protective eyewear
This procedure contains mandatory replaceable parts. Refer to component overview and parts information prior to starting procedure.
Mandatory Replacement Parts
- Plug - for checking and filling
- Risk of damaging transfer case and the front axle differential through incorrect oil level.
- Depending on the version there are transmissions with separate or combined oil systems.
- For vehicles with combined oil systems the steps for it must be followed, because the oil level from the transfer case and the front axle differential are dependent on one another.
- They are differentiated only by the transmission code. Refer to TRANSMISSION/ENGINE ALLOCATION .
- Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature).
- The engine must be switched off when working.
- Move the vehicle onto a four-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
- Transmission in "P".
- The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
General repair instructions. Refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .
Pay attention to clean working conditions for the transmission. Refer to GUIDELINES FOR CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
Always maintain the specified transmission fluid level. The transmission is very sensitive to overfilling.
Replace the plug for the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) check and fill hole.
Follow the disposal requirements.
-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the right heat shield -1-.
-- Audi RS6: Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and then press the coolant pipe on the right to the side.
Danger of eye injury.
- Wear protective eyewear.
-- Place the :SMN372500 under the transmission.
-- Remove the drain plug -arrow A- from the front final drive.
- Specified value: The oil level is correct when the front final drive is filled to the lower edge of the filler opening.
If the level does not reach the bottom of the oil fill hole:
-- Install the :VAS6617/6 with :VAS6617/2 in the transmission hand tight.
-- Install the :VAS6617 and fill the required gear oil. Transmission fluid. Refer to the parts information.
-- Remove the :VAS6617/6 from the transmission and let any extra oil drain out.
-- Tighten the new drain plug -arrow A- for the front final drive.
-- Audi RS6: Install the right coolant pipe on the transmission. Refer toCOOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CTGE, CEUC] or COOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CPNB] or COOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CREC, CREH] .
