Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Level, Checking, Transmission With Combined Oil System: Notes
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler Kit :VAS6617
- :VAS6617/2
- :VAS6617/6
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit :SMN372500
- Protective eyewear
- Risk of damaging transfer case and the front axle differential through incorrect oil level.
- Depending on the version there are transmissions with separate or combined oil systems.
- For vehicles with combined oil systems the steps for it must be followed, because the oil level from the transfer case and the front axle differential are dependent on one another.
- They are differentiated only by the transmission code. Refer to TRANSMISSION/ENGINE ALLOCATION .
- Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature).
- The engine must be switched off when working.
- Move the vehicle onto a four-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
- The transmission must be still for at least 15 minutes to make sure the oil settles internally.
- Transmission in "P".
- The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
General repair instructions. Refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .
Pay attention to clean working conditions for the transmission. Refer to GUIDELINES FOR CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
Follow the disposal requirements.
Replace the ATF drain plug and seal.
Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.
-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the right heat shield -1-.
-- Audi RS6: Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and then press the coolant pipe on the right to the side.
-- Place the :SMN372500 under the transmission.
Danger of eye injury.
- Wear protective eyewear.
Place a cloth over the tunnel crossmember to prevent axle oil from getting into the cast pockets on the top.
-- Remove the drain plug -arrow A- from the front final drive.
-- Remove the drain plug -arrow A- from the center differential housing.
- Specified value: The fluid level is correct, when the front final drive and the rear transfer case if filled up to the lower edge of the filler hole.
If the level does not reach the bottom of the oil fill hole:
-- Install the :VAS6617/6 with :VAS6617/2 in the transfer case inspection hole -arrow A- hand tight and fill until the lower edge of the filling opening with axle oil. Do not close the inspection hole. Transmission fluid. Refer to the parts information.
-- Install the :VAS6617/6 with :VAS6617/2 in the front final drive inspection hole hand tight and fill until the lower edge of the filling opening with axle oil.
-- Then fill the front with approximately 1.0 liter (1.05 quarts) axle oil.
-- Wait the equivalent time, until axle oil flows out of the rear transfer case inspection hole.
-- Immediately after oil flows out, close the rear transfer case inspection hole.
Through overfilling the transmission fluid flows between the inner oil level from the front final drive to the rear transfer case.
-- Remove the :VAS6617/6 from the transmission and let any extra gear oil on the front final drive drain out.
-- Replace both inspection plug and tighten.
-- Audi RS6: Install the right coolant pipe on the transmission. Refer to or COOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CTGE, CEUC] or COOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CPNB] or COOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CREC, CREH] .
