Transmission, Removing, Vehicles With 4.0L TFSI Engine: Removing
-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.
Risk of damaging electronic components when disconnecting the battery.
- Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.
-- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) cable -2-. Refer to BATTERY .
-- Remove the engine cover in the direction of -arrows-.
Fire danger and danger of damaging without engine cover.
- Before closing the front lid, the engine cover must be installed.
- Without an engine cover with the front lid closed the vehicle must not be started and must not be driven.
-- Remove the noise insulations -1 and 2-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the left and right catalytic converter. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CYNB] or CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CTGE, CEUC] orCATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CREC, CREH] .
-- Remove the right coolant pipe on the transmission. Refer to COOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CTGE, CEUC] or COOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CPNB] or COOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CREC, CREH] .
-- Remove the radiator with the fan shroud. Refer to FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CTGE, CEUC] or FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CPNB] or FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CREC, CREH] .
-- Remove the driveshaft. .
-- Remove the ATF cooler. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (ATF) COOLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolts -2 through 5- connecting the engine to transmission. They are accessible from above.
-- Move the tower brace into its installed position and then tighten the bolts hand-tight.
-- Secure the engine with the :T10038 as illustrated.
-- Remove left and right drive axle cover -1- in the wheel housing. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the left heat shield -1-.
Catch any leaking Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) with a cloth.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the ATF pipe -1- from the transmission.
-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the :VAS6122 .
There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.
- Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.
-- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).
-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise in direction of -arrow- and disconnect the connector from the transmission.
-- Free up the electrical wiring harness on the transmission.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and then remove the heat shield from the right drive axle.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the left drive axle heat shield.
-- Remove the left and right drive axles from the transmission flange shafts. Refer to DRIVE AXLE .
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and the push the splines together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shield.
-- Remove the ball socket -1- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the :80-200 .
-- Press the securing clips -2- off and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
-- Loosen the clamp -1- and remove the coolant hose.
Ignore item -2-.
-- Loosen the retainer in the direction of -arrow-, push the release downward and disconnect the connector -2- from the Power Steering Control Module -J500-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Power Steering Control Module -J500-.
-- Loosen the bolt -2- and remove the bolts -1 and 3-.
Ignore -arrows-.
-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission in direction of -arrow-.
-- Attach the :T40272 to the vibration damper bolts.
- The semi-round recess -arrow A- on the :T40272 must face the semi-round recess -arrow B- on the vibration damper.
Ignore the notch on the :T40272 .
-- Counterhold the crankshaft with the :T40272 and an angled wrench and loosen the drive plate bolts.
When mounting, turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.
-- Remove the six torque converter bolts -arrow- while turning the crankshaft 60° further in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Remove the starter bolt -1-.
-- Remove the starter from the transmission and leave it in the installation position.
-- Remove the remaining engine/transmission bolts -6 through 11- but leave one bolt -7- installed hand-tight.
Danger of leaks in the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) pan.
- The :T40173 must not be set on the ATF pan.
-- Place the :VAS6031 with the prepared :T40173 on the bottom of the transmission.
-- The transmission support must be placed at the front as follows:
- The bracket -2- fits into the dual-mass flywheel on the transmission housing on the left side of the transmission.
- The transmission mount is positioned on the differential housing on the right side of the transmission. Insert a flat piece of rubber -1- in between to protect the housing.
-- Secure the transmission with a tensioning strap -1-.
