Selector Mechanism, Removing And Installing: Removing
-- Remove the front ashtray. Refer to FRONT ASHTRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Disconnect the connectors -2 and 4-.
The illustration does not show the insulation mat.
A second technician is required when detaching shift mechanism below vehicle.
-- Remove the insulation mat over the shift mechanism.
-- Remove the bolts -1, 3, 5 and 6-.
Vehicles with a Single Pipe Exhaust System
-- Remove the front exhaust pipe/front muffler or the front exhaust pipe. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER .
Vehicles with a 6-Cylinder or 8-Cylinder Engine
-- Remove the right front muffler. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER for 3.0L .
All Vehicles
-- If equipped, remove the left and right crossmember. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME .
-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
The suspension components could be damaged.
- Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield -1- (if equipped).
Vehicles with a Bolted Driveshaft
-- Counterhold the driveshaft using Counterhold - Kit - Multiple Use T10172 with Counterhold - Kit - Adapter T10172/5 and remove the bolts attaching the driveshaft to the transmission.
-- Press the driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.
-- Place the driveshaft on the front crossmember.
Vehicles with an Attached Driveshaft
Check the vehicle data label or the designation on the rear final drive itself to determine which one is installed in the vehicle. Then select the correct rear final drive service information.
-- Removing the driveshaft (attached). Refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT, MOUNTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE , and DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, DRIVESHAFT CONNECTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE . For Sport Differential, refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT, MOUNTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE , and DRIVESHAFT, MOUNTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING . .
Vehicles with a 6-Cylinder or 8-Cylinder Engine
The decoupling elements in the front muffler could be damaged.
- Do not bend decoupling element in front muffler more than 10°.
-- Loosen the clamping sleeve -1-, slide to the rear and then tie it to the left front muffler.
Ignore item -2-.
All Vehicles
-- Mount the Engine/Gearbox Jack - Gearbox Support T10337 on the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931 and attach it under the transmission.
-- Raise the transmission slightly.
There is the risk of an accident.
- The Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931 may only be used during assembly and must not sit unsupervised under the vehicle.
-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.
-- Lower the transmission to dimension -a- using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931.
- Dimension -a- = maximum 70 mm.
-- Remove the selector lever cable ball socket -2- using the Pry Lever80-200 from the gearshift lever.
-- Remove the clip -1- and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
-- Remove the nuts -arrows- (if equipped).
-- Lower the underbody cover on the inner side just enough until the heat shield -1- for the center tunnel can be removed.
-- Remove the selector mechanism.
