Thermostatic Expansion Valve Manifold and Tube Assembly: Removal

NOTE: During the removal of components, cap, tape or otherwise appropriately protect all openings to prevent the ingress of dirt or other contamination. Remove protective materials prior to installation.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
NOTE: Expedition shown, Navigator similar.
  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to the appropriate Recovery procedure. Refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) System Recovery, Evacuation and Charging - Vehicles With: R1234YF Refrigerant  or refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) System Recovery, Evacuation and Charging - Vehicles With: R134A Refrigerant .
  2. With the vehicle in N, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting .
  3. Remove the battery tray. Refer to: Battery Tray .
  4. Remove retainers, release the engine appearance cover from the rear retainers and then remove the engine appearance cover.

  5. Release the mounting clip and position the wiring harness routing bracket aside. Use the General Equipment: Flat Headed Screw Driver.

    1. Remove the retainer.

      Torque: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

    2. Remove the nut and disconnect the thermostatic expansion valve manifold and tube assembly.

      Torque: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

    • Make sure to cover any open ports to prevent debris from entering the system.

  6. Position the lower air deflector aside.

  7. Remove the nut and disconnect the thermostatic expansion valve manifold and tube assembly.

    • Make sure to cover any open ports to prevent debris from entering the system.

      Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  8. Remove the nuts and disconnect the thermostatic expansion valve manifold and tube assembly.

    • Make sure to cover any open ports to prevent debris from entering the system.

      Torque:

      1: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

      2: 159 lb.in (18 Nm)

    WARNING: When releasing the cooling system pressure, cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a thick cloth.

    Loosen the pressure relief cap.

  10. Using general tools, clamp the hoses. Use the General Equipment: Locking Pliers.

    1. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors.
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  11. Release the tab and position the bracket and wiring harnesses aside.

  12. Disconnect the quick release couplings and position the front and rear heater core lines aside. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  13. Release the tabs and remove the cover.

  14. Remove the nuts and position the cables aside.

    Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  15. Remove the nut and the thermostatic expansion valve manifold and tube assembly.

    • Make sure to cover any open ports to prevent debris from entering the system.

      Torque: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)
