Fuel System Safety Precautions

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2016 Audi A6 Quattro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Note the following when working on the fuel system:

WARNING:

There is a risk of injury because the fuel is under pressure.

  • Place rags around the connection before opening the system. Then release pressure by carefully loosening the connection.
  • Wear safety gloves
  • Wear protective eyewear.

There is a risk of burns due to hot fuel.

  • The temperature of the fuel lines or fuel may reach 100 °C (212 °F) after stopping the engine. Let the fuel cool down before opening any line connections otherwise there is a danger of scalding.
  • Wear safety gloves
  • Wear protective eyewear.

Fuel coming into contact with skin poses a health risk.

  • Do not let fuel come in contact with bare skin. Wear fuel-resistant gloves.

Danger due to leaking fuel

  • Because the Transfer Fuel Pump -G6- runs briefly when the battery is connected and the driver's door is opened, the voltage supply to the Transfer Fuel Pump -G6- must be disconnected before opening the fuel system.
  • Disconnect the power supply by removing the fuse for the Fuel Pump Control Module -J538- /fuel delivery unit. Refer to the appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM or disconnect the battery.

Perform the following steps before starting work on the fuel system:

WARNING:

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging electronic components when disconnecting the battery.

  • Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.
  • Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is turned off. Refer to BATTERY .
