Removing And Installing

-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the decoupling element inside the front exhaust pipe.

  • Do not bend decoupling element in front exhaust pipe more than 10°.

-- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamp -arrows-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield (if equipped) for the driveshaft -A-.

-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT, MOUNTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE or OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT, BOLTS ON TRANSMISSION SIDE . For Sport Differential, refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT BOLTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE, AUDI A4 AND A5 or OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT, MOUNTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE .

-- Support the transmission using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931 and the attached Engine/Gearbox Jack - Gearbox Support T10337.

WARNING:

There is the risk of an accident.

  • The Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931 may only be used during assembly and must not sit unsupervised under the vehicle.

-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.

-- Lower the transmission to dimension -a- using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- and the tunnel crossmember.

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the transmission.

-- Remove bolts -1 to 4-.

CAUTION:

Danger of damaging the center differential.

  • Carefully and slowly pull center differential housing off of transmission toward rear. Otherwise the center differential can fall out of the transmission.
  • A center differential that has fallen out may not be installed.

-- Carefully remove the center differential housing -1-, while doing so the transmission fluid flows out.

-- Remove the guide sleeve -4-, spring -3- center differential -2-.

If the gear carrier -1- and the center differential remains in the center differential housing, proceed as follows:

CAUTION:

Danger of damaging the sealing surface on the center differential housing.

  • Use a hammer to hit the housing carefully on several places.

-- Hold the gear carrier -1- by one of the side ribs with pliers and remove it in -direction of arrow A-.

-- Using a Rubber Hammer, tap the housing on alternating sides -B arrows-.

-- Remove the center differential, guide sleeve and the spring from the center differential housing.

Center Differential Housing, Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
