Removing 

-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.

-- Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging electronic components when disconnecting the battery.

Vehicles with hydraulic power steering gear 

-- Extract the power steering fluid using the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 or VAS6622A.

-- Remove the engine cover -arrows-.

-- Remove the noise insulations -1- and -2-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

CAUTION:

The suspension components could be damaged.

Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.

Do not support the vehicle on the subframe or on the subframe crossbrace (for example using a floor jack or something similar).

-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and push them both upward. Refer to OVERVIEW - STEERING COLUMN and OVERVIEW - STEERING GEAR .

CAUTION:

The airbag spiral spring could be damaged.

  • Only disconnect universal joint from steering gear if front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
  • Do not change the steering wheel and steering gear position. Secure the steering wheel, for example using adhesive tape.

-- Remove the nuts for the front exhaust pipe -arrows-.

CAUTION:

The decoupling elements in the front exhaust pipe could get damaged.

  • Do not bend decoupling elements in front exhaust pipe more than 10°.

-- Disconnect the exhaust system from the clamping sleeve -arrows- and remove the front exhaust pipe.

-- Remove the bolt -1- and -2- and retaining strap.

-- Remove the tower brace. Refer to TOWER BRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the air filter housing. .

-- Remove the nuts -1, 2, 3- from the turbocharger and attach the particle filter up out of the way.

-- Remove the bolt -2-.

NOTE:

Ignore -item 1-.

-- Unclip the wire -A- with the Pry Lever 80-200 from the upper transmission and disconnect the connector -C-.

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -3 to 6-.

-- Remove the upper starter bolt -1-.

-- Remove the spacer sleeve -2- between the starter and the transmission.

-- Install the tower brace and engage on the engine lifting eye using the Tensioning Strap T10038 as shown in the illustration.

-- Tension the tensioning strap.

-- Disconnect the connector -2- from the Engine Speed Sensor -G28- and free up the wire on the transmission.

NOTE:

Ignore -item 1-.

Vehicles with transmission fluid heater

WARNING:

Risk of burning due to hot steam and hot coolant.

The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.

Reduce pressure by cover coolant expansion tank cap with cloths and carefully opening.

-- Remove both of the coolant hoses from the transmission with Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm 309494.

-- Place the drip tray underneath the transmission, open the spring clamps -1- and remove both of the coolant hoses.

-- If equipped, remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield -A-.

-- Block the driveshaft using the Counterhold - Kit - Multiple Use T10172 and Counterhold - Kit - Adapter 5 T10172/5 so that it does not turn, too.

NOTE:

For vehicles with "the driveshaft connected on the transmission side", the rear final drive is counterheld the same way.

-- Remove the gearshift shaft -1- and then move the gearshift lever -2- forward in -direction of arrow- into 6th gear.

-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.

-- Turn the clutch module over both front wheel 120° in direction of engine rotation and remove the three drive plate bolts -arrow-.

Driveshaft bolted on the transmission side:

-- Counterhold the propshaft using Counterhold - Kit - Multiple Use T10172 with Counterhold - Kit - Adapter 5 T10172/5 and remove the bolts attaching the driveshaft to the transmission.

-- Press the driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.

-- Secure the driveshaft to the side.

Driveshaft connected on the transmission side: 

-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT or 39 FINAL DRIVE, DIFFERENTIAL for Sport Differential.

-- Remove the left and right noise insulation -1- inside the wheel housing.

-- If equipped, remove the right subframe shield -1-. Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shields inward.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shield from the right driveshaft.

-- Remove left and right driveshafts from transmission flange shafts.

-- Disconnect the connector -arrow- using the Transmission Range Gear Recognition Switch -F208- using the Reversing Light Switch Connector Release Tool T40138 and free up the wire.

-- Disconnect the connector from the Transmission Neutral Position Sensor -G701- -arrow- and free up the cable.

Vehicles with Gear Recognition Sensor -G604- from MY 2013  .

There are different connectors to the Gear Recognition Sensor -G604-. Disconnect the connectors as follows:

-- Press the lock -1- downward, disconnect the connector -2- and free up the wire.

-- Pry out lock -1- approximately 3 mm with a screwdriver -direction of arrow A-.

-- Press the lock -1- downward -direction or arrow B-, disconnect the connector -2- and free up the wire.

-- Remove the bolt -1-.

NOTE:

Ignore -item 2-.

-- Remove the bolt -2- and remove the clutch slave cylinder from the transmission while doing so disengage the pipe from the bracket.

-- Secure the clutch slave cylinder sideways in the engine compartment.

CAUTION:

The clutch slave cylinder could be damaged.

  • Do not press the clutch pedal after the clutch slave cylinder has been removed.

-- Remove the nut -1-.

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the gearshift shaft inside the transmission.

  • Do not pry off the transmission shift lever -1- using a pry bar or hit it with a hammer.
  • Use only the Puller - Gear Shaft Linkage T40160 to pull the transmission shift lever off.

-- Install the Puller - Gear Shaft Linkage T40160 and remove the transmission shift lever -1-.

Vehicles with hydraulic power steering gear

-- Place the Used Oil Collection And Extraction Unit under the separating point.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-, disconnect the hydraulic oil line -1- from the steering gear and move it to the side.

NOTE:

To prevent dirt from getting in, seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug taken from the Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

-- Remove the starter bolt -3- from the engine side.

-- Remove the starter from the transmission and leave it in the installation position.

NOTE:

It is not necessary to disconnect the starter cable.

-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931 with the Gearbox Support T40173 under the transmission and secure with the tensioning strap -1- as shown in the illustration.

-- Remove the remaining bolts -7 through 10- that attach the engine to the transmission.

-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.

-- Press the transmission off the engine and lower it carefully using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931.

NOTE:

Be careful not to pinch the cable on the top of the transmission when lowering it.

Pay attention to driveshaft clearance when lowering.

-- If the transmission removed is being replaced, then the following components must be changed:
