Transmission, Removing, AUDI A4, A5 With 4-Cylinder TDI Engine, Pr-Th3/TM4

- Engine Support Bridge 10-222A
- Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Ring Wrench - 16mm VAG1332/14
- Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931
- Step Ladder VAS5085
- Puller - Gear Shaft Linkage T40160
- Gearbox Support T40173
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Counterhold - Kit - Multiple Use T10172A with Counterhold - Kit - Adapter 5 T10172/5
- Reversing Light Switch Connector Release Tool T40138
- Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm 309494 Quantity: 2
- Hose Clip Pliers VAG1921
Removing
Proceed as follows:
-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.
-- Turn off the ignition and remove the key.
Risk of damaging electronic components when disconnecting the battery.
- Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.
-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
-- Carefully remove the engine cover from the pins in the -direction of the arrow-. Do not pull sharply on the engine cover or pull it to one side.
-- Loosen the fasteners -1 through 4- and -arrows- and remove the noise insulation.
A5 Cabriolet:
-- Remove the left and right crossmember. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME .
All vehicles:
-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
The suspension components could be damaged.
Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.
Do not support the vehicle on the subframe or on the subframe crossbrace (for example using a floor jack or something similar).
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and push them both upward. Refer to OVERVIEW - STEERING COLUMN and OVERVIEW - STEERING GEAR .
The airbag spiral spring could be damaged.
- Only disconnect universal joint from steering gear if front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
- Do not change the steering wheel and steering gear position. Secure the steering wheel, for example using adhesive tape.
-- Remove the noise insulation -1- in the right wheel housing.
-- Remove the nuts for the front exhaust pipe -arrows-.
The decoupling elements in the front exhaust pipe could get damaged.
- Do not bend decoupling elements in front exhaust pipe more than 10°.
-- Disconnect the exhaust system from the clamping sleeve -arrows- and remove the front exhaust pipe.
-- Remove the bolt -1- and -2- and retaining strap.
Risk of burning due to hot steam and hot coolant.
The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
Reduce pressure by cover coolant expansion tank cap with cloths and carefully opening.
-- Place a catch tray under the engine and drain the coolant. Refer to COOLANT, DRAINING AND FILLING for 2.0L, engine codes CAED, CAEB, CPMB, CPMA, COOLANT, DRAINING AND FILLING for 3.0L, engine codes CCBA, CGXC, CTUB, or COOLANT, DRAINING AND FILLING for 3.2L, engine code CALA .
Vehicles with transmission fluid heater
-- Remove both of the coolant hoses from the transmission with Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm 309494.
-- Place the drip tray underneath the transmission, open the spring clamps -1- and remove both of the coolant hoses.
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the seal -arrow-.
-- Remove the individual parts -1, 2 and 3- or the complete plenum chamber cover (depending on the date of manufacture). Refer to PLENUM CHAMBER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolt -1- and remove the junction box from the tower brace in -direction of arrow-.
-- Unclip the connector -2- from the tower brace.
-- If equipped, remove the tower brace -3-. To do this, remove the bolts -1- and nuts -2-.
-- Mark the coolant hoses -1- and -2- for installation later and then disconnect them from the connections to the heat exchanger for the heater.
-- Unclip the coolant hoses together with the hose guide from the plenum chamber bulkhead and push them into the engine compartment.
Another possibility is to disconnect the coolant hoses from the engine coolant pipes so that the hoses remain in their installed position inside the plenum chamber bulkhead.
-- Disconnect the brake booster vacuum line on the plenum chamber bulkhead and then remove the plenum chamber bulkhead. Refer to OVERVIEW - BULKHEAD .
-- Remove the connecting rod bolt -3- from the plenum chamber.
Ignore -items 1 and 2-.
Vehicles with a particulate filter
-- Remove the air filter housing. .
-- Remove the nuts -1, 2, 3- from the turbocharger and attach the particle filter up out of the way.
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the bolts -3 through 6- connecting the engine to transmission. They are accessible from above.
The bolts -3- and -5- also attach the wire bracket. Tie this bracket to the engine.
-- Remove the upper starter bolt -1-.
-- Remove the spacer sleeve -2- between the starter and the transmission.
-- Place the Engine Support Bridge 10-222A with the Engine Support Bridge - Engine Bracket 10-222 A/1 and the Engine Support Bridge - Engine Support 3 10-222A/3 on the left and right suspension strut tower, as shown in the illustration.
-- Engage the Engine Support Bridge - Spindle 10-222A/11 on the right rear and left front engine lifting eyes.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield (if equipped) for the driveshaft -A-.
-- Block the driveshaft using the Counterhold - Kit - Multiple Use T10172 and Counterhold - Kit - Adapter 5 T10172/5 so that it does not turn, too.
For vehicles with "the driveshaft connected on the transmission side", the rear final drive is counterheld the same way.
-- Remove the gearshift shaft -1- and then move the gearshift lever -2- forward in -direction of arrow- into 6th gear.
-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.
-- Turn the clutch module over both front wheel 120° in direction of engine rotation and remove the three drive plate bolts -arrow-.
Driveshaft bolted on the transmission side:
-- Counterhold the driveshaft using Counterhold - Kit - Multiple Use T10172 with Counterhold - Kit - Adapter 5 T10172/5 and remove the bolts attaching the driveshaft to the transmission.
-- Press the driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.
-- Secure the driveshaft to the side.
Driveshaft connected on the transmission side:
-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT or 39 FINAL DRIVE, DIFFERENTIAL for Sport Differential.
Continuation for all vehicles
-- If equipped, remove the subframe shield -1- on the left and right side. Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shields inward.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shield from the right driveshaft.
The illustration shows the installation position with the transmission removed.
-- Remove left and right driveshafts from transmission flange shafts.
-- Disconnect the connector from the Transmission Neutral Position Sensor -G701- -arrow- and free up the cable.
-- Remove the bolt -2- and secure the clutch slave cylinder sideways in the engine compartment.
The clutch slave cylinder could be damaged.
- Do not press the clutch pedal after the clutch slave cylinder has been removed.
-- Remove the nut -1-.
Danger of causing damage to the gearshift shaft inside the transmission.
- Do not pry off the transmission shift lever -1- using a pry bar or hit it with a hammer.
- Use only the Puller - Gear Shaft Linkage T40160 to pull the transmission shift lever off.
-- Mount the Puller - Gear Shaft Linkage T40160 and remove the gearshift rod -1-.
-- Remove the bolts -1- to remove the torque support from the engine.
Ignore -2- and -3-.
-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931 with the Gearbox Support T40173 under the transmission and secure with the tensioning strap -1- as shown in the illustration.
Be careful not to get the electrical wires caught on the transmission when attaching the tensioning strap.
-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.
-- Lower the transmission only to dimension -a- using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931.
- Dimension -a- = maximum 80 mm.
-- Lightly tension the Engine Support Bridge 10-222A threaded spindles.
Use a Step Ladder VAS5085 to get to the threaded spindles when the vehicle is raised.
-- Unclip the electrical wire -A- from the transmission -arrows-.
-- Unclip the bracket -B- and the connector -C- for Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 4 -G648- from the transmission and tie it up.
Vehicles through MY 2012
-- Disconnect the connector on the Transmission Neutral Position Sensor -G701- -1- and free up the wire.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Transmission Range Gear Recognition Switch -F208- or the Gear Recognition Sensor -G604- with the Reversing Light Switch Connector Release Tool T40138 and free up the wires.
-- Remove the push rod bolt -2-.
The bolt -3- is already removed.
Vehicles with Gear Recognition Sensor -G604- from MY 2013 .
There are different connectors to the Gear Recognition Sensor -G604-. Disconnect the connectors as follows:
-- Press the lock -1- downward, disconnect the connector -2- and free up the wire.
or
-- Pry out lock -1- approximately 3 mm with a screwdriver -direction of arrow A-.
-- Press the lock -1- downward -direction or arrow B-, disconnect the connector -2- and free up the wire.
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the starter bolt -3- from the engine side.
-- Remove the starter from the transmission and leave it in the installation position.
It is not necessary to disconnect the starter cable.
-- Remove the remaining bolts -7 through 10- that attach the engine to the transmission.
-- Remove the transmission approximately 20 mm from the engine.
-- Using the left spindle on the Gearbox Support T40173 tilt the transmission downward on the right side and guide it past the particulate filter -arrow A-. While doing this, push the transmission slightly to the left.
-- Lower the transmission carefully. When doing this, guide it by the steering pinion/steering gear and by the final drive cover on the subframe -arrow B-.
Be careful not to pinch the cable on the top of the transmission when lowering it.
Pay attention to driveshaft clearance when lowering.
-- If the transmission removed is being replaced, then the following components must be changed:
- Bracket -1- for the exhaust system retaining strap. Refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for 2.0L, engine codes CAED, CAEB, CPMB, CPMA, EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for 3.0L, engine codes CCBA, CGXC, CTUB, or EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for 3.2L, engine code CALA .
- Tunnel crossmember with the transmission mount and transmission support. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME MOUNT .
- If necessary remove the clutch module. Refer to CLUTCH MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
