Transmission, Removing, 3.2L FSI

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Removing

-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.

-- Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging electronic components when disconnecting the battery.

  • Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the rear engine cover -arrows-.

-- Remove the left and right front wheels.

-- Remove the left and right drive axle cover -1- inside the wheel housing.

-- Remove the noise insulations. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the left front muffler. Refer to FRONT MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING for 3.2L, engine code CALA .

-- Remove the right catalytic converter. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER for 3.2L, engine code CALA .

-- Remove the bolt -arrow- from the ATF pipes.

NOTE:

Lay a cloth under the separating point to prevent ATF from leaking out.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and remove the ATF pipes from the transmission, then secure them at the top.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

-- Remove the bolts -2 through 5- connecting the engine to the transmission. They are accessible from above.

-- Place the Engine Support Bridge 10-222A with the Engine Support - Basic Set- Connection T40091/3 on the left and right suspension strut tower, as shown in the illustration.

-- Engage the Engine Support Bridge - Spindle10-222A/11 on the right engine lifting eyes.

-- Install the remaining parts of the Engine Support Bridge 10-222A as illustrated. Place the Engine Support Bracket T40093/3 on the notches in the longitudinal member.

-- Engage the Engine Support Bridge - Spindle10-222A/11 on the left front engine lifting eyes.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shield from the right drive axle.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the left drive axle heat shield.

-- Remove left and right drive axles from transmission flange shafts.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.

  • Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.

-- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).

-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise -arrow- and disconnect the connector from the transmission.

-- Free up the electrical wiring harness on the transmission.

-- Disconnect the connector -2- from the Engine Speed Sensor -G28- and free up the wire.

NOTE:

Ignore item -1-.

-- Remove the ball socket -1- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the Pry Lever 80-200.

-- Press the securing clips -2- off and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

NOTE:

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

CAUTION:

The suspension components could be damaged.

  • Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.

All A4; A5 Coupe

-- Remove the nut -1- from the power steering hydraulic line.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the subframe crossbrace.

A5 Cabriolet

-- Remove the left and right bolt -2-.

NOTE:

Ignore item -1-.

-- Remove the bolt -2- for the power steering hydraulic line.

-- Remove the bolts -1- and -arrows- and the subframe crossbrace.

All Vehicles

CAUTION:

The airbag spiral spring could be damaged.

  • Remove the steering column from the steering gear only when the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
  • Do not change the steering wheel and steering gear position. Secure the steering wheel, for example using adhesive tape.

-- Lower the steering wheel as far as possible.

-- Turn the steering wheel into its center position (wheels in the straight-ahead position) and secure it.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow- for the steering column. Refer to OVERVIEW - STEERING COLUMN .

-- Remove the steering column -1- from the steering gear -2- and slide it all the way up.

-- Remove the bolt -1- press the retaining tab off the transmission and tilt it back -arrow-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield.

-- Counterhold the driveshaft using Counterhold - Kit - Multiple Use T10172 with Counterhold - Kit - Adapter 5 T10172/5 and remove the bolt attaching the driveshaft to the transmission.

-- Press the driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.

-- Secure the driveshaft to the side.

-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.

-- Insert the Crankshaft Socket T40058 guide pins as follows:

-- Counterhold the crankshaft using the Crankshaft Socket T40058 to loosen the torque converter bolts.

NOTE:

When mounting, turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

-- Remove the six torque converter bolts -arrow- while turning the crankshaft 60° further in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Remove the bolt -1- from the bottom of the starter on the engine side.

-- Remove the starter -A- from the transmission.

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolt -arrow 2-.

NOTE:

Locking ring -B- can fall out after loosening the starter.

-- Remove the remaining bolts -6 through 10- that attach the engine to the transmission.

-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931 with the Gearbox Support T40173 under the transmission and secure with the tensioning strap -1- as shown in the illustration.

NOTE:

The Gearbox Support T40173 is not illustrated.

-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.

-- Lower the transmission only to dimension -a- using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931.

-- Lightly tension both Engine Support Bridge - Spindle10-222A/11.

-- Press the transmission off the engine and lower it carefully using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931.
