Engine Coolant Temperature Receiver Gauge Malfunction [08/2013 - ]: Procedure

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM 
    1. Check if CAN communication DTCs are output. Refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [08/2013 - ] .

      CAN communication DTCs are output. B

    A: Go to next step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (WATER TEMPERATURE METER OPERATION) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. Check the operation by referring to the table below.
      COMBINATION METER

      Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
      Water Temperature Meter Operation Engine coolant temperature receiver gauge OFF, LOW, NORMAL, HIGH -

      OK

      Engine coolant temperature receiver gauge indication is normal.

    NG → See step   10 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMPERATURE) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.
    5. Set the vehicle in maintenance mode using the Techstream. Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [08/2013 - ] .
    6. Check the values by referring to the table below.
      COMBINATION METER

      Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Coolant Temperature Engine coolant temperature/0 to 127.5°C (0 to 261.5°F) After warming up: 75 to 100°C (167 to 212°F) -

      OK

      Engine coolant temperature displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as the engine coolant temperature receiver gauge indication.

      HINT: 

      • When the Data List values and engine coolant temperature receiver gauge values match, a signal output error of the ECM or an internal malfunction of the combination meter assembly is suspected.
      • When the Data List values and engine coolant temperature receiver gauge values do not match, an internal malfunction of the combination meter assembly is suspected.

    NG → See step   10 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK SFI SYSTEM 
    1. Check if SFI system DTCs are output. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [08/2013 - ] .

  5. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMPERATURE, COOLANT TEMP) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus:
      1. for Combination Meter: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.
      2. for Engine and ECT: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.
    5. Set the vehicle in maintenance mode using the Techstream. Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [08/2013 - ] .
    6. Check the values by referring to the table below.
      COMBINATION METER

      Diagnostic Note:
      This is the engine coolant temperature.
      HINT: 
      • After warming up the engine, the engine coolant temperature is 75 to 100°C (167 to 212°F).
      • After a long soak, the engine coolant temperature, intake air temperature and ambient air temperature are approximately equal.
      • If the value is -40°C (-40°F), or higher than 135°C (275°F), the sensor circuit is open or shorted.
      • Check if the engine overheats when the value indicates higher than 135°C (275°F).

      HINT: 

      • When the Data List values of the ECUs match, an internal malfunction of the ECM is suspected.
      • When the Data List values of the ECUs do not match, a signal output error of the ECM or an internal malfunction of the combination meter assembly is suspected.

  6. REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Replace the combination meter assembly with a new or known good one. Refer to REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] .

      OK

      The operation of the engine coolant temperature receiver gauge returns to normal.

    NG → See step   8 

    OK → END 

  7. GO TO SFI SYSTEM. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [08/2013 - ] 
  8. REPLACE ECM. Refer to  REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] 
  9. GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING [08/2013 - ] 
  10. REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL [08/2013 - ]
