DTC P0011: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1); DTC P0012: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1) [08/2013 - ]: Procedure

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011 OR P0012) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
    5. Read the DTCs.
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      DTC P0011 or P0012 is output A
      DTC P0011 or P0012 and other DTCs are output B

      HINT: 

      If any DTCs other than P0011 or P0012 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    B → See step   9 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE VVT LINEAR) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode). Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [08/2013 - ] .
    5. Start the engine.
    6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1).
    7. Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using the Techstream.
      OK

      Techstream Operation Specified Condition
      0% Normal engine speed
      100% Engine idles roughly or stalls

      HINT: 

      • Refer to "Data List / Active Test" [VVT OCV Duty #1 and VVT Change Angle #1]. Refer to DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST [08/2013 - ] .
      • If the result is not acceptable, cool the engine (engine coolant temperature is 50°C (122°F) or less) and perform the Active Test again.
      • Test not possible with the shift lever in P during charge control. Move the shift lever to N to perform test.
      • If the DTCs are stored after the Active Test, clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [08/2013 - ] .

    NG → See step   4 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011 OR P0012) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [08/2013 - ] .

      HINT: 

      • P0011 is output:

        Clear the DTC without using the Techstream.

      • P0012 is output:

        Clear the DTC with using the Techstream.

    5. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
    6. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    7. Turn the Techstream on.
    8. Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode). Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [08/2013 - ] .
    9. Start the engine and warm it up.
    10. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending.
    12. Read the pending DTCs.
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      DTC is not output A
      DTC P0011 or P0012 is output B

      HINT: 

      DTC P0011 or P0012 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects may then be captured by the oil filter.

  4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE TIMING CHAIN AND JUMPED TEETH)

    *1 Timing Mark - -
    1. Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly. Refer to DISASSEMBLY [08/2013 - ] .
    2. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the "0" timing mark of the timing chain cover.
    3. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gear assembly and camshaft timing sprocket are at the positions shown in the illustration.

      HINT: 

      If the timing marks are not as shown, turn the crankshaft one revolution clockwise.

      OK

      Timing marks on camshaft timing gear assembly and camshaft timing sprocket are aligned as shown in the illustration.

    NG → See step   10 

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Refer to INSPECTION [08/2013 - ] .

    NG → See step   12 

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER 
    1. Remove the oil control valve filter. Refer to REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] .
    2. Check that the filter is not clogged.

      OK

      Oil control valve filter is not clogged.

    NG → See step   14 

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY 
    1. Replace the camshaft timing gear assembly. Refer to REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] .

      HINT: 

      Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the camshaft timing gear assembly. Refer to INITIALIZATION [08/2013 - ] .

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  8. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011 OR P0012) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [08/2013 - ] .

      HINT: 

      • P0011 is output:

        Clear the DTC without using the Techstream.

      • P0012 is output:

        Clear the DTC with using the Techstream.

    5. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
    6. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    7. Turn the Techstream on.
    8. Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode). Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [08/2013 - ] .
    9. Start the engine and warm it up.
    10. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending.
    12. Read the pending DTCs.
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      DTC is not output A
      DTC P0011 or P0012 is output B

  9. GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [08/2013 - ] 
  10. ADJUST VALVE TIMING. Refer to  REASSEMBLY [08/2013 - ] 
  11. REPLACE ECM. Refer to  REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] 
  12. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] 
  13. CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS. Refer to  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS [08/2013 - ] 
  14. REPLACE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER. Refer to  REMOVAL [08/2013 - ]
