Valve Timing, Checking: Procedure

-- Remove the upper timing chain cover. Refer to UPPER TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the front noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .

-- Turn the crankshaft with the :T40263  , :T40314  and a 24 mm socket on the vibration damper in the direction of engine rotation until the marks -arrows- are almost on top.

-- Removing the spark plug from cylinder 1 with the :3122B  .

-- Install the :T10170A  all the way into the spark plug thread.

-- Insert the :VAS6341  with the :T10170A/1  all the way and secure it with the locking nut -arrow-.

-- Turn the crankshaft slowly in the direction of the engine rotation until the maximum dial reading is reached. When the maximum dial reading is reached (turning point of the meter) position the piston at >>TDC<<.

TIP: 

• If the crankshaft was turned past "TDC", turn the crankshaft two more turns in the direction of engine rotation. Do not turn the engine in the opposite direction of the engine rotation.
• The combination of the following shown :T40263  , : T40314  and 24 mm socket are better suited than the :T10355  for positioning the vibration damper.
