Camshaft, Measuring Radial Clearance

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Plastigage

Procedure 

-- Removal cam follower, refer to LEFT CYLINDER HEAD CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Clean the bearing and the bearing journals.

-- Place Plastigage over entire width of bearing journal or into bearing.

• Plastigage must rest in center of bearing.

-- Re-install the camshafts, mount the bearing bracket and tighten to 10 Nm, refer to Figure, do not turn the camshafts while doing this.

-- Remove the bearing bracket and camshafts.

-- Compare width of Plastigage with calibrated scale.

Radial clearance: 

• New: 0.035 to 0.085 mm.
• Wear limit: 0.100 mm.
