Torque Converter, Installing
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Depth Gauge VAS 6082
Installing
-- Press torque converter hub through shaft seal as far as first stop.
-- Lightly press torque converter inwards and turn until slots on torque converter hub engage in drive lugs on ATF pump gear and torque converter slides in a noticeable distance.
-- The outer sealing lip on the shaft seal can fold inward when the torque converter is being installed -arrow-.
-- If this happens, pull the torque converter out 5 mm. This will correct the position of the sealing lip -arrow-.
-- Then push the torque converter all the way into the transmission.
Installation Dimension
When converter is inserted correctly, distance -a- between contact surfaces on threaded holes and on converter and torque converter bell housing contact surfaces is at least 23 mm.
-- Always use new bolts to attach the torque converter to the drive plate.
Note the following when installing the transmission.
Danger of causing damage to the torque converter drive plate or the ATF pump.
- Before and during fastening the engine/transmission flange bolts, check that the torque converter can still be turned behind the drive plate. If the converter still does not turn, then assume it is installed incorrectly.
Torque converter to drive plate tightening specification, see transmission installation. Refer to TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Check the ATF level after installing the transmission and add more ATF, if necessary. Refer to ATF LEVEL INSIDE TRANSMISSION .
