Camshafts Or Camshaft Bearing, Removing And Replacing, Cylinder Bank 2 (Left): Installing
- Tightening specifications. Refer to OVERVIEW - VALVETRAIN .
- Secure crankshaft in "TDC" position using Crankshaft Holder3242.
-- Mount the Camshaft Fitting Tool - T40096T40096 onto the teeth of the intake camshaft so that one arm of the clamping tool engages in one sprocket half.
- The wider arm must engage into the wider half of the sprocket.
-- Tension the tensioning tool with the thumb wheel until the tooth faces align.
The camshaft thrust bearings and the bearing cap for cylinder bank 2 are marked after work is performed on the exhaust side to prevent them from being installed incorrectly:
| Cylinder Bank 2 (left) | |
|---|---|
| L1/L1 | Front |
| L2/L2 | Front in the center |
| L3/L3 | Rear in the center |
| L4/L4 | Rear |
-- Lay the camshafts thrust bearings "I, II, III" on the cylinder head.
- The cylinder head oil openings -arrow 1- must flow into the thrust bearing oil channels -arrow 2-.
-- Lay the camshaft thrust bearing "IV" on the cylinder head.
- Both alignment sleeves -arrows- must be inserted into the openings on the thrust bearing.
- The alignment sleeves must engage in the openings in the cylinder head.
-- Check the installation direction of the thrust bearings:
- The round edge -arrow 2- points towards the intake side.
- The cornered edge -arrow 1- points towards the exhaust side.
-- Place the camshafts in the "TDC" position in the thrust bearings.
- The intake camshaft -2- must be able to be stopped with the Camshaft Adjustment PinsT40060.
- The bolt -arrow- in the Camshaft Adjustment PinsT40060 must be perpendicular to the center axis of the camshaft.
- The exhaust camshaft -1- must be positioned so that the groove -arrow A- runs parallel above the joint -arrow B- between the thrust bearing and the bearing cap.
-- Apply the appropriate bearing cap to the corresponding thrust bearing.
-- Loop a cable tie -arrows- on the right and left around the thrust bearing and the bearing cap and tighten them.
The cable ties prevent the camshafts and the camshaft bearing from tilting when they are being tightened.
-- Install the bolts -1 to 12- in the bearing cap.
-- Install the Locking DeviceT40311/1 in the threaded hole -1- at the level of the 5th cylinder, as shown in the illustration.
-- Install the Locking DeviceT40311 on the tensioning claw mounting bracket -arrows-, as shown in the illustration.
-- Tighten the bearing cap bolts. Refer to Figure.
-- Check the camshaft "TDC" position:
- The intake camshaft -2- must be able to be stopped with the Camshaft Adjustment PinsT40060.
- The bolt -arrow- in the Camshaft Adjustment PinsT40060 must be perpendicular to the center axis of the camshaft.
- The exhaust camshaft -1- must be positioned so that the groove -arrow A- runs parallel above the joint -arrow B- between the thrust bearing and the bearing cap.
The rest of the installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
-- Remove the Camshaft Fitting Tool - T40096T40096.
-- Install the camshaft timing chains. Refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN, REMOVING FROM CAMSHAFTS .
Risk of damaging valves and piston heads after working on valve train.
- The motor must not be started for about 30 minutes after installing camshafts because the hydraulic equalization elements must seat themselves.
- To ensure valves do not strike pistons when starting, carefully rotate engine at least two full revolutions.
