NOTE:
- All cable ties that are opened or cut open during removal must be replaced in the same positions during installation.
CAUTION:
Heed appropriate instructions for battery disconnection → 27 - BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL
.
NOTE:
- So that the front wheels can still be turned with the battery disconnected, the battery may only be connected when ignition key is inserted.
- So that the drive shaft can be turned for removal on vehicles with all wheel drive, the electrical parking brake must be released before the battery is disconnected.
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove cover of luggage compartment right side trim - arrows -.
- Remove cover - 1 - from above battery.
NOTE:
- Disregard - 2 -.
- Disconnect Ground (GND) lead - arrow - at battery.
- Remove engine covers - 1 - and - 2 - off and upward.
- Remove rubber seal - 1 - of plenum chamber covers.
- Remove plenum chamber covers - 2 - and - 3 -.
- Remove left strut tower cover, thereby removing nut - 1 - and spreader clip - 2 -.
- Remove bolt - arrow -.
- Pivot refrigerant line retainer to side.
NOTE:
- To prevent damage to the A/C compressor and refrigerant lines/hoses, make sure that the lines and hoses are not overstretched, kinked or bent.
- Remove right strut tower cover, thereby removing spreader clips - 1 - and threaded fastener - 2 -.
- Remove cover - arrows - out of retaining clips.
- Remove air guide pipe - arrows -.
- Remove rear bolt - 4 - for left and right strut tower brace.

- Secure Adapter 10 - 222 A/21 to left and right strut towers.
- The supports are designated for left and right side of vehicle.
- The center mounting point - 2 - of supports is on front bolts for strut tower brace.
- The Adapters 10 - 222 A/21 are fastened with strut tower rear bolts - 3 -.
- The knurled head screw - 1 - must be turned down so far that the support plate rests on top of the strut tower.

- Assemble Engine Support Bridge 10 - 222 A with two rotational connectors T40091/3 similar to illustration and attach to Adapter 10 - 222 A/21.
- Fasten bolts - A -.

- The engine support bridge is thereby secured.

- Insert four-edge tube T40091/1 in rotational connector T40091/3.
NOTE:
- Allow both Four-Edge Tubes T40091/1 to stick out far enough so that both rear spindles can be fastened securely.
- Install an additional Hook 10 - 222 A/10 and support connector T40092/4 on right four-edge tube T40091/1 as shown in the illustration.
- On left four-edge tube T40091/1 , install support connectors T40092/4 as shown in illustration.
- Raise vehicle.
- On vehicles equipped with auxiliary heater, remove bolts - arrows - for exhaust pipe of auxiliary/additional heater to noise insulation.
- Loosen quick-release clips - 1 through 3 - and bolts - 4 - and remove noise insulation.
- Remove cross member for noise insulation on subframe - arrows -.

- Fasten lower left counter support T40092/2 to lower left mounting location of longitudinal member with two bolts - arrows -.
- The lower left counter support T40092/2 is secured with two bolts - arrows - , M10 x 30 (10.9 DIN 6921), torque 40 Nm.

- Secure lower right counter support T40092/3 to lower right long member mount with two bolts - arrows -.
- The lower right counter support T40092/3 is secured with two bolts - arrows - , M10 x 30 (10.9 DIN 6921), torque 40 Nm.
- Push both supports T40091/2 upward from below, between front end and engine.
NOTE:
- Make sure that supports T40091/2 have sufficient clearance.
- When guiding supports T40091/2 through, no components may be damaged.
- Guide supports T40091/2 from below through openings of upper support connectors T40092/4.
- A second technician must slide lower cross member T40092/1 sideways through opening for lower left counter support T40092/2 and lower right counter support T40092/3 and secure supports T40091/2.
- Push securing pins - 1 - through holes of supports T40091/2 as far as stop.
CAUTION:
- The securing pins - 1 - must be inserted up to the stop.
- Both circlips - 2 - for the pins - 1 - must be pressed downward, so that the pins are secured against falling out.
- If the pins are not properly secured, the engine and transmission may fall down when removing the subframe!
- Fasten bolts - A -.
- Push securing pins - 1 - through holes of support connectors T40092/4 as far as stop.
NOTE:
- Both four-edge tubes T40091/1 must be aligned horizontally.
CAUTION:
- The securing pins - 1 - must be inserted up to the stop.
- Both circlips - 2 - for the pins - 1 - must be pressed downward, so that the pins are secured against falling out.
- If the pins are not properly secured, the engine and transmission may fall down when removing the subframe!
- Fasten each of the two rear spindles to the engine lifting eyes with a shackle 10 - 222 A/12.
- Fasten front spindle to engine lifting eye with Additional Hooks 10 - 222 A/2.
- Slightly pretension spindles of engine support bridge.
- Fasten all bolts - A -.
NOTE:
- The engine support bridge is thereby fixed and secured.
- Remove cross member by removing bolts - 2 -.
- Loosen nut - arrow - for front transmission mount.
- Remove bolts for front transmission mounts - arrows A - on left and right.
- Disconnect electrical connection - 2 - at vehicle level control system sensor on both sides of vehicle.
- Remove coupling rod - 1 - at control arms on both sides of vehicle.
- Mark position of subframe on body with a felt tip pen.
- Place Engine/Transmission Jack V.A.G 1383 A under subframe and lightly press against it.
- Remove left and right engine mounting bolts - arrows -.
- Mark installation position of subframe on long members with a felt-tip pen.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 4 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 - and - 3 - in a diagonal sequence in stages.
- Slowly lower subframe together with engine carrier.
- Remove engine carrier.

- Remove right engine support with engine mount →

- Remove starter → 27 - BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL
- Insert guide pin on adapter T40058 so large diameter - arrow 1 - faces toward engine. The small diameter - arrow 2 - faces toward adapter.
- To loosen torque converter bolts, counter hold crankshaft with adapter T40058.
NOTE:
- Pay no attention to - arrow -.
- Remove 6 internal TORX bolts - arrows - of the torque converter in the opening of the removed starter (turn crankshaft 1 /3 revolution further for each bolt).
- Separate exhaust system at clamping sleeves - 1 - and - 2 -.
NOTE:
- To prevent damage, decoupling element of the front exhaust pipes must never be kinked by more than 10° →

- Remove heat shield - A - for drive shaft - arrows -.
- Remove bolts at transmission/drive shaft flange.
- Press drive shaft together with rear final drive; universal joint is able to slide axially.
- Tie up drive shaft to body.

Lower back of transmission:
- Place Engine/Transmission Jack V.A.G 1383 A with transmission support 3282 under transmission.
- Place both front Adjustment Plates 3282/52 against transmission oil pan.
- Insert third Adjustment Plate 3282/48 in hole at rear of transmission housing.
- Mark installation location of tunnel cross member on body.
- Remove bolts for left - 1 - and right - 2 - transmission mounts at tunnel cross member.
- Then remove transmission tunnel cross member from body - arrows -.

- Slightly lower rear engine/transmission subframe via spindles.
CAUTION:
To prevent damage from occurring, it is very important to pay attention to everything in the engine compartment.
- Remove rear tunnel cross member.
- Remove front transmission supports with transmission mounts.
- Remove noise insulation from left and right wheel housing - arrows -.
- Remove heat shield from transmission above left and right drive axle - arrows -.
- Remove left and right drive axle from transmission flange.
- Remove both nuts - arrows - on retaining straps for main catalytic converters.
- Remove retainer for left and right front exhaust pipes - arrows -.
- Remove front exhaust pipe with left main catalytic converter - arrows

- Loosen nuts - arrows - at right main catalytic converter, so that it is loose.
NOTE:
- The right main catalytic converter does not require removal, since accessibility to the oxygen sensor is difficult.
- Remove shield from selector shaft lever.

- Press ball socket - 1 - of selector lever cable off from selector shaft lever using pry lever 80 - 200.
- Unclip locking clip - 2 - at selector lever cable mounting bracket.
- Lay selector lever cable free.
- Mark ATF cooling hoses to ATF cooler, to prevent switching them during installation.
- Clamp off ATF cooling hoses to ATF cooler using hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. 3094.
- Place drip tray for workshop crane VAS 6208 under transmission.
- Remove ATF cooling hoses from ATF cooler.
- Disconnect electrical connections on transmission, thereby pivoting screw connections counter clockwise - arrow -.
- Remove Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 - arrow - on transmission.
- Remove retainer for electrical connections from bottom of transmission.
- Lay all hoses and electrical harnesses free from transmission housing.
- Mount transmission support 3282 on Engine/Transmission Jack V.A.G 1383 A.
- Place Adjustment Plate 3282/52 on Transmission Support 3282 , as shown in illustration.
- Align arms of transmission support to correspond with holes in adjustment plate.
- Attach support elements on adjustment plate, as illustrated.
NOTE:
- The pin 3282/50 has one flattened side - arrow -. When inserting into transmission, the flattened side must face toward the oil pan.
- The arrow symbol on Adjustment Plate 3282/52 points in direction of travel.
- Place Engine/Transmission Jack V.A.G 1383 A with transmission support 3282 under transmission.
- Align Adjustment Plates 3282/52 so they are parallel to transmission by adjusting Transmission Support 3282.

- Fasten left front support to threaded hole of transmission - 1 - with an additional washer - A - between transmission and support.
NOTE:
- Without the washer - A - , the transmission connection - B - will be damaged.
- Fasten left rear support to threaded hole of transmission, using a bolt - 2 -.
- Support right front of transmission in bolted flange - arrow 1 - of oil pan.
- Insert pin 3282/50 into right rear mounting hole of transmission housing - arrow 2 - with flattened side - arrow - facing transmission oil pan.
CAUTION:
- The flattened side of pin 3282/50 must face toward transmission oil pan, so that it does not bend or become damaged.
- If the transmission oil pan is damaged, it must be replaced.
- Remove bolts - 1 - through - 10 -.
- Using a pry bar, press torque converter off from drive plate on engine - arrow -.
- Press transmission off from alignment sleeves and lower it carefully.
- Lower transmission at rear edge by adjusting transmission support 3282 accordingly.
- Guide transmission out at an angle (rearward/downward).
CAUTION:
When lowering transmission, make sure there is clearance at the drive axles.
