Driver Knee Airbag, Removing and Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Removing
CAUTION:

Airbag Safety Precautions .
CAUTION:
On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-off emergency (back-up) battery for Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery. Switch-on emergency (back-up) battery after reconnecting vehicle battery → 91 - COMMUNICATION
NOTE:
- The battery must be disconnected when the ignition is switched on.
- Switch on ignition.
- Disconnect battery. → 27 - BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL
- Remove drivers side storage compartment → Driver Side Storage Compartment, Assembly Overview . Make sure the knee airbag is installed on the storage compartment.
- Disconnect knee airbag connector (yellow).
- To do so, pull locking mechanism - 2 - in direction of arrow and disconnect connectors - 1 - and - 3 -.
- Remove storage compartment - 4 -.
- Unclip connector - 2 -.
- Remove nuts - 3 - (13x).
- Remove drivers side knee airbag - 1 -.
- Place airbag unit - 1 - so padding faces upward.
Installing
Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:
- Replace the following components after an airbag deploys:
- Driver-side storage compartment - 4 -
- Driver side storage compartment mounting bolts
- Nuts - 3 - to secure knee airbag
- Make sure the knee airbag connector engages audibly with the coupling.
CAUTION:
No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.
- Connect the battery. → 27 - BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL
NOTE:
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 signals a malfunction after installation, DTC memory must be checked, erased and once again checked using Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A.
Tightening torques
- Knee airbag to the driver side storage compartment: 2.5 Nm
