Wheel Bearing Housing, Removing and Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1332
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1576
- CV joint boot clamp tool T40067
Removing
During assembly work, make sure no pressure points form on the suspension strut boot.
Wheel Bearing, Assembly Overview → Wheel Bearing Housing and Wheel Bearing Unit, Assembly Overview .
- Place vehicle on a hoist → Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels .
- Remove driveshaft collar bolt → Driveshaft, Removing and Installing .
- Remove connector - 1 - from speed sensor and the wire from bracket - arrow -.
- Remove brake caliper and secure it to the body using wire → 46 - BRAKES - MECHANICAL COMPONENTS .
- Remove brake disc.
- Press track control arm joint pin off the wheel bearing housing tapered seat (the nut stays loose on the joint pin) → Track Control Arm, Removing and Installing .
- Press guide link joint pin off the wheel bearing housing tapered seat (the nut stays loose on the joint pin) → Guide Link, Removing and Installing .
- Remove bolt - 4 - and nut - 5 -.
- Pull out tie rod end.
- Remove nut - 1 - , bolt - 2 - and both control arms - 3 - upward.
The slits in wheel bearing housing must not be widened using a chisel or similar tool!
- Remove lower control arm and guide link from wheel bearing housing.
- Secure driveshaft to body, e.g. with wire.
- Remove wheel bearing housing.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
During assembly work, make sure no pressure points form on suspension strut boot.
- Insert both upper control arm joint pins - 2 - into wheel bearing housing - 3 - and bend them down as far as possible using pliers T40067.
- Tighten bolt - 1 -.
- Install tie rod end → Tie Rod Ball Joint, Removing and Installing .
- Install track control arm joint pin → Track Control Arm, Removing and Installing .
- Install guide link joint pin → Guide Link, Removing and Installing .
- Tighten driveshaft collar bolt → Driveshaft, Removing and Installing .
- Mount wheel and tighten → 44 - WHEELS, TIRES, VEHICLE ALIGNMENT .
- Place vehicle on wheels → Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels .
- Perform vehicle alignment → Wheel Alignment .
