Wheel Bearing Housing, Raising to Control Position to Tighten Bolts: Notes
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1332
- Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1783
- Mount T10149
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Insertion tool 10 mm V.A.G 1783/1
- Wood block (hardwood) 30 x 50 x 1,000 mm
Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent.
Before axle components with bonded rubber bushings are tightened, they have to be brought to a position which matches the position when the vehicle is being operated (control position).
Otherwise the rubber mounting will be stressed, resulting in a reduced service life.
This position can be simulated on the hoist by raising the wheel bearing housing using the engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A and the wheel hub support T10149.
Before adjusting the control position
- Place vehicle on hoist → Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels .
- Remove wheel housing liner → 66 - EXTERIOR EQUIPMENT .
- Clean air connection area.
- Remove connecting piece - 1 - at residual pressure valve - 2 -. Air escapes then.
NOTE:
- Generally, residual pressure valve - 2 - must not be loosened or removed.
- Seal both connections. Ensure no dust particles enter connections.
Fig 4: Level Control System Sensor Bolt, Nut & Brake Line Bracket & Air Spring Damper/Transverse Link Bolt
- Remove bolt - 1 - from the level control system sensor.
- Remove nut - 3 -.
- Press wheel bearing housing down by hand and remove bolt - 4 - from the air spring damper/transverse link.
- Insert a wood block in the subframe - arrow 1 - and support on the wheel bearing housing - arrow 2 -.
- Press wheel bearing down using the wood block - arrow 3 - until the air spring damper fork - arrow 4 - can be removed toward the rear.
A second technician is needed to pull the air spring damper fork back.
- Place a folded cloth between the air spring damper and the transverse link.
- Release wheel bearing housing slowly. Do not place the air spring damper - 1 - on the parking brake housing - 3 - or stabilizer bar - 2 - when doing so.
Fig 7: Inserting Wheel Hub Support T10149 Into Engine/Transmission Jack V.A.G 1383 A And Pressing Wheel Bearing Housing Far Enough Upward Until Control Position
- Install wheel hub support T10149 using a wheel bolt.
- Insert wheel hub support T10149 into engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A and press wheel bearing housing far enough upward until control position, dimension - a - , is obtained.
Control position
- Dimension - a - for vehicles with standard suspension: 398 mm
- Dimension - a - for vehicles with sport suspension: 378 mm
CAUTION:
- Do not lift or lower the vehicle if the engine/transmission holder is below it.
- Do not leave the engine/transmission holder under the vehicle longer than is necessary.
