Air Supply Unit, 8-Cylinder, Removing and Installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1783
- Insert tool 10 V.A.G 1783/1
Removing
NOTE:
- The air supply unit is installed at the left behind the front bumper.
- Place vehicle on a hoist → POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .
- Vent system → System, Venting or Filling .
- Remove wheel covers, remove cover cap on light-alloy wheels (removal hook in vehicle tool kit).
- Remove the left front wheel.
- Secure brake disc with a wheel bolt.
- On vehicles with an auxiliary heater, remove the bolts - arrows - connecting the exhaust pipe to the noise insulation.
- Loosen quick-release fasteners - 1 - and - 2 - and remove the noise insulation.
- Remove bolts - 1 - from front wheel housing liner.
- Remove both bolts - arrows - from front wheel housing liner.
Do not remove rear wheel housing liner - 2 -.
- Remove upper bolt - arrow - from front wheel housing liner.
NOTE:
- Press the locking pins on the wheel housing liners only about 5 mm into the expanding clip and not all the way through.
- This releases the locking pin so it can be removed.
- When installing, slide the locking pin back and the expanding clip can be used again.

- Press locking pins on expanding clips on the front wheel housing liner - 1 - about 5 mm deep into the expanding clip using a screwdriver.
- Remove expanding clip.
- Repeat procedure to remove the expanding clip - arrow - in the upper area of the front wheel housing liner.
- Repeat procedure to remove the expanding clip - arrow - in rear area of the front wheel housing liner - 1 -.
- Remove nut - 1 -.
- Disconnect connectors - 2 -.
- Open clamping sleeve - 1 - and remove intake hose - 2 - from the connecting piece - 3 -.
- Remove air line from air supply unit - arrow -.
- Remove nuts - 4 - and air supply unit.
NOTE:
- The illustration does not show the bumper.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
- Install air supply unit nuts - 4 -.
- Install air line - arrow - on air supply unit.
- Close clamping sleeve - 1 - and connect intake hose - 2 - to the connecting piece - 3 -.
- Remove nut - 1 -.
- Connect connectors - 2 -.
- Install front noise insulation.
- Install wheel housing liner → .
- Mount wheel and tighten → .
- Fill system → System, Venting or Filling .
- Place vehicle on wheels → POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .
