Camshafts, Removing and Installing

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

Removing 

NOTE:
  • Camshafts and crankshaft must not be rotated when the timing drive is disassembled.
  • The camshaft bar T10068 serves exclusively to lock the camshaft at TDC. To counterhold, an open-end 32 mm wrench must be set on the hex of the camshaft.
  • Engine removed
  • Engine separated from transmission

Cylinder bank 1 (right)

  1. Remove bearing caps 1 and 13.
  2. Remove bearing caps 5 and 9.
  3. Remove bearing cap 7.
  4. Loosen bearing caps 3 and 11 alternately and in diagonal sequence, and remove.
  1. Remove bearing caps 2 and 14.
  2. Remove bearing caps 6 and 10.
  3. Remove bearing cap 8.
  4. Loosen bearing caps 4 and 12 alternately and in diagonal sequence, and remove.

  1. Remove bearing caps 21 and 33.
  2. Remove bearing caps 25 and 29.
  3. Remove bearing cap 27.
  4. Loosen bearing caps 23 and 31 alternately and in diagonal sequence, and remove.
  1. Remove bearing caps 22 and 34.
  2. Remove bearing caps 26 and 30.
  3. Remove bearing cap 28.
  4. Loosen bearing caps 24 and 32 alternately and in diagonal sequence, and remove.

Continuation for both cylinder banks 

NOTE:
  • Ensure that the roller rocker levers and the support elements are not interchanged. If necessary, remove roller rocker levers together with the support elements and place on a clean surface.

Installing

  1. Fasten bearing caps 3 and 11 alternately and diagonally and then tighten to specified torque.
  2. Fasten bearing cap 7.
  3. Fasten bearing caps 5 and 9.
  4. Fasten bearing caps 1 and 13.
  1. Fasten bearing caps 4 and 12 alternately and diagonally and then tighten to specified torque.
  2. Fasten bearing cap 8.
  3. Fasten bearing caps 6 and 10.
  4. Fasten bearing caps 2 and 14.

  1. Fasten bearing caps 23 and 31 alternately and diagonally and then tighten to specified torque.
  2. Fasten bearing cap 27.
  3. Fasten bearing caps 25 and 29.
  4. Fasten bearing caps 21 and 33.
  1. Fasten bearing caps 24 and 32 alternately and diagonally and then tighten to specified torque.
  2. Fasten bearing cap 28.
  3. Fasten bearing caps 26 and 30.
  4. Fasten bearing caps 22 and 34.
CAUTION: Camshaft and crankshaft must not be rotated when the timing drive is disassembled.

Tightening torque 

Component Nm
Bearing cap to cylinder head 5 plus 45°

* 45 corresponds to one eighth rotation.
