Camshafts, Removing and Installing
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
Removing
NOTE:
- Camshafts and crankshaft must not be rotated when the timing drive is disassembled.
- The camshaft bar T10068 serves exclusively to lock the camshaft at TDC. To counterhold, an open-end 32 mm wrench must be set on the hex of the camshaft.
- Engine removed
- Engine separated from transmission
- Remove timing chains for camshafts → Timing Chains for Camshaft Drive, Removing and Installing .
- Loosen bolts for camshaft adjuster by counterholding at hex - arrow - of camshaft with an open-end 32 mm wrench.
- Remove camshaft adjuster.
- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove control housing for camshaft adjustment.
Cylinder bank 1 (right)
- Remove intake camshaft - A - as follows:
- Remove bearing caps 1 and 13.
- Remove bearing caps 5 and 9.
- Remove bearing cap 7.
- Loosen bearing caps 3 and 11 alternately and in diagonal sequence, and remove.
- Remove exhaust camshaft - B - as follows:
- Remove bearing caps 2 and 14.
- Remove bearing caps 6 and 10.
- Remove bearing cap 8.
- Loosen bearing caps 4 and 12 alternately and in diagonal sequence, and remove.
Cylinder bank 2 (left)
- Remove intake camshaft - A - as follows:
- Remove bearing caps 21 and 33.
- Remove bearing caps 25 and 29.
- Remove bearing cap 27.
- Loosen bearing caps 23 and 31 alternately and in diagonal sequence, and remove.
- Remove exhaust camshaft - B - as follows:
- Remove bearing caps 22 and 34.
- Remove bearing caps 26 and 30.
- Remove bearing cap 28.
- Loosen bearing caps 24 and 32 alternately and in diagonal sequence, and remove.
Continuation for both cylinder banks
- Carefully remove camshafts and place on a clean surface.
NOTE:
- Ensure that the roller rocker levers and the support elements are not interchanged. If necessary, remove roller rocker levers together with the support elements and place on a clean surface.
Installing
- Secure crankshaft in TDC position using crankshaft holder 3242.
- Place support elements together with roller rocker levers into cylinder head.
- Install roller rocker levers so that they rest on ends of valve stems.
- Oil journal surfaces of camshafts.
- Place respective camshaft into camshaft bearings of cylinder head.

- Insert camshafts into cylinder head in such a way that they are set at TDC ignition timing.
- Slits - arrows - in camshafts at front must stand parallel at same height with upper edge of cylinder head.
- Lightly coat face surface - shown as shaded area - of bearing cap with axial bearing (bearing caps 7, 8, 27, 28) with adhesive lubricating paste G 052 723 A2 .
Cylinder bank 1 (right)
- Set camshaft bearing caps in place according to their number identification:
- Points - arrow A - of intake and exhaust camshaft bearing caps face outward.
- Identification on bearing caps is legible when read from intake side.
- Install intake camshaft - A - as follows:
- Fasten bearing caps 3 and 11 alternately and diagonally and then tighten to specified torque.
- Fasten bearing cap 7.
- Fasten bearing caps 5 and 9.
- Fasten bearing caps 1 and 13.
- Install exhaust camshaft - B - as follows:
- Fasten bearing caps 4 and 12 alternately and diagonally and then tighten to specified torque.
- Fasten bearing cap 8.
- Fasten bearing caps 6 and 10.
- Fasten bearing caps 2 and 14.
Cylinder bank 2 (left)
- Set camshaft bearing caps in place according to their number identification:
- Points - arrow A - of intake and exhaust camshaft bearing caps face outward.
- Identification on bearing caps is legible when read from intake side.
- Install intake camshaft - A - as follows:
- Fasten bearing caps 23 and 31 alternately and diagonally and then tighten to specified torque.
