Seal For Flange/Driveshaft On Front Final Drive, Replacing, Final Drive Removed

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Removing

-- Remove front final drive. Refer to FRONT FINAL DRIVE .

-- Lay front final drive on a workbench.

-- Refer to FLANGE SHAFT AND DRIVESHAFT SEAL ON REAR FINAL DRIVE, FINAL DRIVE REMOVED .

-- Take note of this value. After the seal is replaced, friction torque must be restored to this value.

Use friction meterVAS 6222.

-- Remove hex nut for flange / driveshaft.

A -

2 Bolts M10 X 25

When loosening the nut of the flange/driveshaft, counterhold using counterholder3435 (2nd technician).

-- Refer to FLANGE SHAFT AND DRIVESHAFT SEAL ON REAR FINAL DRIVE, FINAL DRIVE REMOVED .

-- Remove driveshaft flange. Use a slide hammerVW 771 if it is difficult.

-- Remove shaft seal.

-- Clean threads for the nut on the drive pinion.

Installing

-- Lightly oil outer circumference of new shaft seal.

-- Drive in new shaft seal as far as stop without tilting it.

-- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing greaseG 052 128 A1.

Before installing flange/driveshaft, check the dust cap for damage. Replace the dust cap if necessary. Refer to DUST CAP FOR FLANGE/DRIVESHAFT, REPLACING .

-- Install flange/driveshaft, being aware of the marking from removal SEAL FOR FLANGE/DRIVESHAFT ON FRONT FINAL DRIVE, REPLACING, FINAL DRIVE REMOVED .

-- Coat threads on the new nut with locking fluidD 154 100 A1.

-- Tighten new nut for drive pinion until friction torque measured prior to removal is attained SEAL FOR FLANGE/DRIVESHAFT ON FRONT FINAL DRIVE, REPLACING, FINAL DRIVE REMOVED .

2 Bolts M10 X 25

When tightening the nut of the flange/driveshaft, counterhold using counterholder3435 (2nd technician).

Increase tightening torque gradually, frequently measuring friction torque. The friction torque measured prior to removal must not be exceeded! Otherwise the front final drive must be replaced!

-- Install front final drive FRONT FINAL DRIVE .

-- Check gear oil level in front final drive. Refer to AXLE OIL LEVEL IN FRONT FINAL DRIVE, CHECKING .
