Removing

-- Remove left wheel.

-- Remove left drive axle from rear final drive.

-- Lay drive axle as far forward as possible.

NOTE:

Make sure drive axle protective coating is not damaged.

-- Secure slide hammerVW 771 to left flange shaft.

-- Pull out left flange shaft.

-- Remove flange shaft seal using VW 771/1 and VW 771/37.

Installing

-- Coat outer edge of the seal with axle oil.

-- Drive on in new shaft seal as far as stop.

-- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing greaseG 052 128 A1.

Before installing the flange shaft, check the dust cap for damage. Replace the dust cap if necessary. Refer to DUST CAP FOR FLANGE SHAFT, REPLACING .

-- Remove old circlip -A- from groove in flange shaft using pliers.

Protective jaws

-- Insert new circlip in groove of flange shaft, being careful not to over-stretch circlip.

-- Drive flange shaft in using a centering mandrelVW 295.

-- Attach drive axle at rear final drive flange shaft. Refer to DRIVE AXLE .

-- Check gear oil level in rear final drive. Refer to REAR FINAL DRIVE AXLE OIL LEVEL, CHECKING .

Removing

-- Remove front final drive. Refer to FRONT FINAL DRIVE .

-- Secure slide hammerVW 771 to left flange shaft.

-- Pull out left flange shaft.

-- Remove flange shaft seal using slide hammer-complete setVW 771 and additional part for VW771771/37.

Installing

-- Lightly oil outer circumference of new shaft seal.

-- Drive on new shaft seal as far as stop.

-- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing greaseG 052 128 A1.

-- Remove old circlip -A- from groove in flange shaft using pliers.

-- Insert new circlip in groove of flange shaft, being careful not to over-stretch circlip.

-- Drive in flange shaft using a plastic head hammer.

-- Install front final drive FRONT FINAL DRIVE .

-- Check gear oil level in front final drive. Refer to AXLE OIL LEVEL IN FRONT FINAL DRIVE, CHECKING .
