Flange Shaft And Driveshaft Seal On Rear Final Drive, Final Drive Removed

Removing

-- Remove rear final drive. Refer to REAR FINAL DRIVE .

-- Set rear final drive on a workbench.

-- Refer to SEAL FOR FLANGE/DRIVESHAFT ON FRONT FINAL DRIVE, REPLACING, FINAL DRIVE REMOVED 

-- Note this value. After the seal is replaced, friction torque must be restored to this value.

Use friction meterVAS 6222.

-- Remove hex nut for flange / driveshaft.

-- Secure counterholder3145 with 2 bolts M10 x 25 to flange/driveshaft -arrows-.

When loosening the nut of the flange/driveshaft, counterhold using counterholder3145 (2nd technician).

-- Refer to SEAL FOR FLANGE/DRIVESHAFT ON FRONT FINAL DRIVE, REPLACING, FINAL DRIVE REMOVED 

-- Remove driveshaft flange. Use a slide hammerVW 771 if it is difficult.

-- Pull out seal using slide hammer-complete setVW 771 and additional part for VW771VW 771/37.

-- Clean threads for the nut on the drive pinion.

Installing

-- Coat outer edge of the seal with axle oil.

-- Drive in new shaft seal as far as stop without tilting it.

-- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing greaseG 052 128 A1.

Before installing flange/driveshaft, check the dust cap for damage. Replace the dust cap if necessary. Refer to DUST CAP FOR FLANGE/DRIVESHAFT, REPLACING .

-- Install flange/driveshaft, being aware of the marking from removal FLANGE SHAFT AND DRIVESHAFT SEAL ON REAR FINAL DRIVE, FINAL DRIVE REMOVED .

-- Coat threads on the new nut with locking fluidD 154 100 A1.

-- Tighten new nut for drive pinion until friction torque measured prior to removal is attained FLANGE SHAFT AND DRIVESHAFT SEAL ON REAR FINAL DRIVE, FINAL DRIVE REMOVED .

When tightening the nut of the flange/driveshaft, counterhold using counterholder3145 (2nd technician).

Increase tightening torque gradually, frequently measuring friction torque. The friction torque measured prior to removal must not be exceeded! Otherwise the rear final drive must be replaced!

-- Install rear final drive REAR FINAL DRIVE .

-- Check gear oil level in rear final drive. Refer to REAR FINAL DRIVE AXLE OIL LEVEL, CHECKING .
