Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1332
Removing
- Place vehicle on a hoist → Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels .
- Remove collar bolt from driveshaft → Driveshaft, Removing and Installing .
- Remove brake caliper wiring harness connector - 1 - from the retainer and disconnect it.
- Remove bolt from the speed sensor bracket - 2 -. Remove the speed sensor from wheel bearing housing.
- Remove brake caliper and secure it on the body → 46 - BRAKES - MECHANICAL COMPONENTS .
NOTE:
- Secure brake caliper to body with wire.
- Do not allow brake caliper to hang from brake line.
- Remove brake carrier - 1 - and brake disc.
- Remove bolts - 1 - through - 3 - from cover - 4 - and remove cover.
- Remove air spring damper on the transverse link and tilt it back (control position) → Wheel Bearing Housing, Raising to Control Position to Tighten Bolts .
- Remove tie rod - 2 - → Tie Rod, Removing and Installing .
NOTE:
- Replace tie rod if it was loosened or removed at the coupling.
- Mark location of the eccentric bolt - 1 - on the transverse link.
- Remove bolt - 1 - from the transverse link.
- Remove bolt - 3 - from the trapezoidal control arm.
- Remove wheel bearing housing from the driveshaft and from the suspension.
- If the wheel bearing unit will be removed, clamp wheel bearing housing in a vise with protective covers.
- To remove wheel bearing unit, remove bolts - arrows -.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
- If wheel bearing unit was removed, follow the instructions for tightening the bolts.
- First tighten bolts/nuts on components with bonded rubber bushings by hand. Raise wheel bearing housing to tighten bolts/nuts → Wheel Bearing Housing, Raising to Control Position to Tighten Bolts .
- Install new tie rod - 2 - → Tie Rod, Removing and Installing .
- Tighten bolt - 3 - in the trapezoidal control arm.
- Rotate eccentric bolt on the marking applied on the transverse link and tighten the threaded connection - 1 -.
NOTE:
- Do not turn eccentric bolt more than 90 left or right (that is smallest to largest possible adjustment).
- Tighten cover - 4 - with bolts - 1 - through - 3 -.
NOTE:
- The bolts - 2 - and - 3 - secure the wiring harness bracket located behind the cover plate on the wheel bearing housing.
- Install brake carrier and brake caliper on the wheel bearing housing → 46 - BRAKES - MECHANICAL COMPONENTS .
- Insert speed sensor - 2 - in the wheel bearing housing and tighten bracket bolt.
- Insert brake caliper connector - 1 - into retainer and connect it.
- Follow the instructions for further assembly → Working after adjusting control position .
- Tighten driveshaft collar bolt → Installing .
- Mount wheel and tighten → 44 - WHEELS, TIRES, VEHICLE ALIGNMENT .
- Place vehicle on wheels → Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels .
- Perform vehicle alignment → Wheel Alignment .
