Upper coolant pipe, removing and installing: Removing

NOTE:
- All cable ties opened or cut during engine removal must be reinstalled at the same locations during installation.
- Drain coolant → Cooling System, Draining and Filling .
- Remove intake manifold upper part: → Intake Manifold Upper Section, Removing and Installing .
- Remove intake manifold lower part: → Intake Manifold Lower Section, Removing and Installing .
- Remove rubber seal - 1 - for plenum chamber covers.
- Remove plenum chamber covers - 2 - and - 3 -.
- Pry off caps on wiper arms using a screwdriver.
- Loosen nuts - arrows - by several turns.
- Loosen wiper arms by gently rocking arm. Remove nuts and remove wiper arms.
- Remove dust and pollen filter by opening 4 quick-release fasteners.
NOTE:
- Cover the air duct at air conditioning housing with a clean rag so that nothing can fall in.
- Remove bolts - arrows - at left and right for cowl grille - 1 -.
- Carefully pull cowl grille off of retainers at windshield.
- Remove strut tower brace - arrow -.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove retaining bracket.
- Release retaining tabs - arrows - and remove both engine control modules.
NOTE:
- Electrical harnesses remains connected.
- Turn Air quality sensor G238 approx. 90° counter-clockwise - arrow - and remove from retainer.
- Release retaining clips - 1 to 4 -.
- Fold cover for electronics box in plenum chamber open slightly and pull off toward front.
- Disconnect multi-pin harness connectors - arrows - using spark plug connector pliers V.A.G 1922.
- Disengage engine wiring harness at electronics box and at bulkhead.
- Lay wiring harness aside on engine with engine control modules connected.

- Disconnect electrical connector - 2 - for Map controlled engine cooling thermostat F265.
- Move wiring clear.
- Disconnect ground wire - 3 - on cylinder head.
- Loosen harness clamp - 1 - and remove harness from coolant pipe.
NOTE:
- Shown from the rear to improve clarity.
- Remove bolts - 1 to 3 -.
- Disconnect coolant hoses at coolant pipe - arrows -.

- Remove coolant pipe.
