ATF, draining and filling after repairs

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Drip tray V.A.G 1306
- ATF filler tool V.A.G 1924
- Safety glasses
Work procedure
- Engine switched off.
- To ensure vehicle is absolutely level, drive onto a 4-column lifting platform or over a service pit.
- Fill reservoir of ATF Filler Tool V.A.G 1924 with ATF for automatic transmission 09L; ATF specification → Capacities .
CAUTION:
The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other ATF oils!
- Secure ATF Filler Tool V.A.G 1924 reservoir as high as possible on vehicle.
- Loosen quick-release connectors - 2 - and remove rear noise insulation.
Draining ATF
- Place drip tray V.A.G 1306 underneath transmission.
- Remove ATF drain plug - arrow A -.
- Drain ATF.
NOTE:
- Observe disposal regulations.
- The engine must not be started and the vehicle must not be towed if there is no ATF in the transmission!
- Drain plug with sealing ring must be replaced.
- Install new oil drain plug - arrow A - and tighten to 12 Nm.
Filling transmission with ATF
- Remove ATF inspection plug - arrow B -.
- Guide filler hook of ATF filler tool V.A.G 1924 into an opening - arrow - of protective cap, do not push cap up and in while doing so.
- Add ATF using ATF filler tool V.A.G 1924 until ATF exits from check hole.
- Place selector lever in position "P".
- Start engine and switch off again after 20 seconds.
- Once more, add ATF using ATF filler tool V.A.G 1924 until ATF drips from the inspection hole.
- Start engine.
- Continue adding ATF using ATF filler tool V.A.G 1924 until ATF drips from the inspection hole again.
- Tighten ATF inspection plug.
- With engine idling, depress brake pedal and shift selector lever through all selector lever positions, leaving selector lever in each position for at least 10 seconds.
- Place selector lever in position "N".
- Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM and maintain for at least 60 seconds.
- Place selector lever in position "P".
- Continue to add ATF using ATF filler tool V.A.G 1924 until ATF exits again from check hole.
- Tighten ATF inspection plug.
- With engine idling, depress brake pedal and shift selector lever through all selector lever positions, leaving selector lever in each position for at least 10 seconds.
- Place selector lever in position "N".
- Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM and maintain for at least 60 seconds.
- Place selector lever in position "P".
- Check ATF level in planetary gearing → ATF level, checking and topping off .
