Lock carrier, removing
See Caution before beginning repairs on electrical system in ENGINE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
NOTE:
- Engine is removed from front together with transmission after removing lock carrier.
- All cable ties opened or cut when removing engine must be replaced in same position when installing engine.
- Drain coolant into a clean container for re-use or disposal.
- Move gear selector lever into position "N".
- Obtain code on vehicles with coded radio/integrated radio and navigation system.
- Turn off ignition and remove ignition key.
- Turn battery cover latches (arrows) counter-clockwise.
- Lift upward on cover to remove.
- Disconnect ground strap on negative terminal -arrow- of battery.
- Recover refrigerant from refrigerant circuit:

WARNING: Steam or hot coolant can escape when opening expansion tank cap. Cover cap with cloth, and open carefully. - Open cap on coolant expansion tank.
- Remove both front wheels.
- Release fasteners -1- to -4- and remove noise insulation.
- Unbolt left bracket for noise insulation (arrows).
- Remove front bumper:

- Disconnect wiring harness above air ducts.
- Remove air cowls -1- in front of both charge air coolers.
- Place drip tray V.A.G 1306 below engine.
- Turn drain valve (arrow) on radiator counterclockwise. If necessary attach drain hose to connection.
- Remove drain plugs (arrows) and drain coolant from engine block.
- Disconnect coolant hose -2- and drain remaining coolant. See Fig 8.
- Disconnect coolant hose -1- at Valve for coolant circulation -N214-.
- Extract hydraulic fluid from power-assisted steering reservoir using V.A.G 1358 A.
- Place container underneath connecting points to catch escaping fluid.
- Detach hydraulic hoses for power assisted steering (arrows).
NOTE: Observe rules for cleanliness when working on automatic transmission. See RULES OF CLEANLINESS WHEN WORKING ON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS .
- Disconnect ATF pipes (arrows).
- Disconnect oil lines at oil cooler (arrows).
- Remove bolts -2- and -3-. See Fig 12.
- Disconnect coolant hoses -1- and -4-.
- Pull off bottom coolant hose retaining clip (arrow) and remove coolant hose from radiator.
- Remove bolts (arrows).
- Disconnect refrigerant lines from air conditioner compressor.
- Remove retaining screws (arrows) for refrigerant line from lock carrier.
- Cut through cable ties along line.
- Unscrew bolt (arrow) and detach refrigerant line from condenser.
- Remove quick-release screws -1- and -2- and remove engine cover upward (arrows).
- Remove cover (arrow) at power steering fluid reservoir.
- Loosen hose clamps -1- and -3- and remove air guide hoses. See Fig 19.
- Remove bolt -2- for securing air filter.
- Remove bolt -1- at left bracket for air filter housing. See Fig 20.
- Disconnect hose for crankshaft housing ventilation at retaining clip -2-.
- Remove right securing nut (arrow) for air filter housing.
- Pull air filter housing at rear edge a short distance upward
- ...and disconnect electrical harness connectors (arrow) at both Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensors.
- Remove air filter housing.
- Seal openings of rear air guide line. For example, use clean pieces of foam (arrows), so that no small pieces can fall in.
- Remove bolts (arrows) at both air guides and remove air guides at lock carrier.
- Unplug connector (arrow) for headlights on both sides.
- Remove electrical connectors -1- to -3- from retainer and disconnect.
- Move lines and hoses clear.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector (arrow) for Coolant Fan -2- -V177-.
- Unplug electrical connector (arrow) from High Pressure Sensor -G65-.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector (arrow) for Outside Air Temperature Sensor -G17-.
- Remove bolt -1-.
- Remove coolant hose -2-.
- Disconnect coolant hoses -1- and -2-.
- Remove hood release cable at radiator support.

- Remove bolts (arrows) on left and right sides.
- Remove bolts at left and right of impact absorbers (arrows).NOTE: A second technician is required to remove the lock carrier.
- Remove lock carrier and set aside so it cannot topple.
