Pressure checking

• Remove underbody guard.
• Detach cover from fluid reservoir.
• Unclip connector unit (arrow).

• Lift off connector unit.

• Unfasten both hose clamps and remove air hose (arrow).

• Unfasten both hose clamps (arrows) and remove air hose.

• Install VAG 1402/3 adapter on power steering pump in place of the banjo bolt.
• Install hose from VAG1402 pressure gauge on VAG 1402/3 adapter.

• Close shut-off valve on pressure gauge (lever faces toward left).
• Remove 3094 hose clamp and fluid to power steering fluid reservoir if necessary.

• Re-attach lower air hose.

Checking pressure: 

To avoid damaging pump, note the following:

• Do not allow the engine to run more than 10 seconds during the test.
• Start engine without depressing accelerator pedal and let engine idle.
• Make a note of pressure immediately after starting engine when it is idling (this may require a second technician).
• As pressure drops during check, the highest pressure is definitive.
  1. Specification: 120 - 130 bar

• Turn engine off.

  If specification is not obtained, replace the power steering pump. See POWER STEERING PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

• Check fluid level. See POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL, CHECKING; STEERING SYSTEM, BLEEDING AND CHECKING FOR LEAKS .
• Bleed steering system. See STEERING SYSTEM, BLEEDING .
• Check steering system for leaks. See STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS .
