Test conditions
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Audi S6 and 2002 Audi S6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Fuse for engine electronics OK.
- Fuel pump relay OK
- Battery voltage at least 11 V
- Ground connections on engine and transmission OK.
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool with diagnostic adapter V.A.G 1551/3A.
In the automatic test sequence function (address word 00), the K -wire adapter VAS 6017 must also be used on vehicles as of model year 2002.
NOTE:
The Data Link Connector (DLC) is located in below the instrument panel to the left of the steering column.
WARNING:
- When driving the vehicle for measurement and test purposes, always secure the VAS 1551 Scan Tool on the rear seat only and operate it from this position (Second person required).
- Observe the safety precautions. See SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
NOTE:
The following describes On Board Diagnostic (OBD) using the V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool only.

- If no display appears, check diagnostic wires:
Depending on the function required:
- Switch ignition on.
or
Start engine. See ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) , "Selectable functions" table.
- Switch on printer using Print button (Warning lamp in switch illuminates).
- Press key 1 for "Rapid data transfer".
Indicated on display
- Press keys 0 and 1 for address word "Engine electronics" and press the Q key to confirm entry.
If the display shows one of the messages, run through the procedure as described in the Scan Tool instruction program.
The display on V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool shows the control module identification code. Sample control module identification code is shown in Fig 8.

NOTE:
- Incorrect coding may lead to higher emissions and increased strain on the automatic transmission resulting from harsh gearshift jolts.
- A wrong coding also leads to storing of non -existent DTCs in the DTC memory.
If the coding differs from the vehicle version, then:
- Check engine control module coding. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM), CODING .
- Press -->key.

- WAUZZZ4DZXN002341: 17-digit vehicle identification no. (Vehicle Identification Number)
