The term "self-diagnosis" or On Board Diagnostic (OBD) relates specifically to the electrical and electronic part of the control system.

The control module is equipped with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory so that the malfunction can be traced quickly in the event of an electronic/electrical component failure or an open circuit.

The advantages of On Board Diagnostic can only be fully exploited by using the Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 or the V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool, in operating mode 1 "Rapid data transfer".

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory is a non - volatile memory and thus independent of the power supply.

NOTE: If the engine control module detects malfunctions which result in a deterioration of exhaust emissions, these malfunctions will be indicated by illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- in the instrument cluster.

Malfunctions related to Electronic Power Control (EPC) are additionally indicated by the Electronic Power Control (EPC) warning lamp -K132- which is situated in the instrument cluster.
