Removal & Installation (A6 6-Cylinder)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air intake duct. Remove 10 quick release screws retaining under-car splash shield and remove splash shield.
  2. Place lock carrier in service position. See Figure . Remove connector bolt. Install Alignment Tool (3369). See Figure . Remove Torx bolts.
  3. Remove remaining bolts and pull lock carrier forward. Tighten lock-down bolts on left and right side to place lock carrier in service position. See Figure .
  4. Remove belt. Disconnect wiring from generator. On A/C equipped vehicles, remove A/C line bracket and position A/C line out of way.
  5. Cut cable tie-wraps from generator/starter harness and position harness out of way. Remove upper and lower generator bolt. Remove generator from bottom of engine compartment.
  6. Remove positive battery cable and terminal No. 50 (Red/Black wire) from starter solenoid. Remove wiring harness retaining clip from starter motor. Remove 2 starter motor mounting bolts and remove starter.
  7. To, install, reverse removal procedure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
