Removal & Installation (Steel)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 12 other vehicles, including the 2005 Audi allroad, 2004 Audi allroad, 2004 Audi A6, 2003 Audi allroad, and 2003 Audi S6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Remove wheel cover. Loosen drive axle bolt by 90° only. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove drive axle bolt completely.
Remove brake caliper without disconnecting brake hose. Using mechanics wire, hang brake caliper. DO NOT allow brake caliper to hang by brake hose. Remove brake disc. Remove backing plate. Remove ABS wheel speed sensor. See Figure .
Remove upper stabilizer bar link bolt from stabilizer bar. Unscrew bolt (A) for tie rod. See Fig 1 . Mark installation position of eccentric washer for bolt (B). Unscrew bolt (B).

Unscrew bolt (2) for control arm (1). See Fig 2 . Pull wheel bearing housing off drive axle.

CAUTION: Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. The bolted connections should therefore only be tightened when the vehicle is standing on the ground. Otherwise, the rubber bushing will be stressed and have a shortened service life.

To install housing, reverse removal procedure. Always use NEW self-locking nuts and upper outer control arm-to-wheel bearing housing bolt. Perform final tightening of control arm to wheel housing bolts with vehicle weight on wheels. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
After installation, position of steering wheel must be checked with a road test. If steering wheel is crooked, an axle alignment must be performed! See PROCEDURES & SPECIFICATIONS article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
