Test requirements
- Battery Positive Voltage (B+) OK
- Supply voltage and fuses for respective system OK
See appropriate System Wiring Diagrams article.
- Ground (GND) connectors for transmission OK
- Check GND connections for corrosion and damage and repair if necessary.
- Check TCM GND connection per wiring diagram.
- Check battery GND strap and GND strap between battery and transmission.
- Selector lever in "P" position
- Parking brake applied
- Ignition switched off
- Connect VAG 1551 ((VAG 1552) scan tool to 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) to left of steering column, using adapter cable VAG 1551/3.
- If nothing is shown on the display, check the power supply to the DLC.

- Additional operating instructions can be obtained by pressing the HELP button on the VAG 1551 scan tool.
- Press the => button to advance through the program sequence.

Indicated on display:
Operating modes 1 and 2 are displayed alternately.
- Switch ignition on.
- Operate brake pedal one time.
- Press PRINT button to switch printer on (indicator light in button comes on).
- Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.

- After address word 33 is inserted and confirmed with the -Q- button, the OBD program can begin. For OBD functions, see ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD II), FUNCTIONS .
- After address word 00 is inserted and confirmed with the -Q- button, the automatic test sequence can begin (the DTC memory for every system is checked). Stored malfunctions are displayed in sequence and printed out.

- Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.

- Press buttons -0- and -2- to insert "Transmission Electronics" address word 02.

- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

TCM identification
The transmission control module identification is dependent on manufacture status (data status). A control module identification may appear which is different than that in this example. For TCM applications, see parts catalog.

If "Control module does not answer" is indicated on display:
A list of the possible malfunction causes can be printed out by pressing the HELP button.
After eliminating possible malfunction causes:
- Again press buttons -0- and -2- to insert "Transmission Electronics" address word 02.
If "Control module does not answer" is again indicated on display:
- Check power supply by conducting electrical test step 1, see ELECTRICAL TESTING .
- Check wiring connection to DLC.

- Check DTC table. See DTC TABLE ; DTC 65535, "Control Module Malfunctioning."
- Press --> button.
