Adaptation of vehicle keys: Requirements

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 Audi S8, 2003 Audi A8, 2002 Audi S8, 2002 Audi A8, and 2001 Audi S8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

All keys available. If there are no ignition keys available, see "Procedure for lost key". See LOST KEY PROCEDURE .

Insert first key in ignition lock and switch on ignition.
Connect VAG 1551 scan tool and initiate OBD of the anti-theft immobilizer using address word "17". See ANTI-THEFT IMMOBILIZER ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD), INITIATING .

After control module identification is displayed:

Press --> button.

Perform login procedure for instrument cluster. See LOGIN PROCEDURE, INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .

Press buttons -1- and -0-. This selects "Adaptation", function 10.

Repeat adaptation with entry of secret number.

The upper line indicates that 2 ignition keys are adapted to the system.

NOTE: The number of keys to be adapted can also be entered via button 1 (decrease number) and button 3 (increase number).

Press --> button.

Press the -0- button four times and then the total number of keys to be adapted, including the key that is in the ignition (e.g. 00004), max. 8 keys possible.
Press -Q- button to confirm input.

NOTE: No single key must require more than 30 seconds during adaptation, otherwise the warning lamp will blink with a frequency of 2 Hz and adaptation must be performed again in its entirety (login procedure and adaptation).

Insert next key in ignition lock and switch on ignition. Warning lamp lights up when ignition is switched on and goes out after approx. one second. This key is also adapted now.
Repeat procedure until all keys have been adapted. After the last key, the warning light will go out approx. 2 seconds after successful adaptation and a short confirmation signal will be given (0.5 seconds light off, 0.5 seconds light on, light off).
During adaptation of vehicle keys, the fixed code of each key (transponder) is adapted to the immobilizer. Furthermore, the computational rule for the variable code is written into each key and locked. After that keys can only be adapted for immobilizer III if they have the correct variable code (key has already been adapted to the system) or if they have not yet been locked (replacement part key). Adapted vehicle keys can not be used in conjunction with a different immobilizer system.
Select "Check DTC memory", function 02. If there are no DTCs stored, then the function "Adapting keys" has been completed successfully.

Adaptation of ignition keys is automatically terminated if:

The number of keys to be adapted has been reached.
The ignition is switched on using a key that is already adapted and remains switched on for more than one second (DTC stored).
The allotted adaptation time of 30 seconds per key, after ignition is switched on, is exceeded (DTC stored).
A DTC is stored during key adaptation.
