Adaptation after replacing the instrument cluster: Requirements

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 Audi S8, 2003 Audi A8, 2002 Audi S8, 2002 Audi A8, and 2001 Audi S8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Insert old (authorized) ignition key into ignition lock and switch on ignition.
If no authorized ignition keys are available, then new ignition keys must be made and be adapted following "Adaptation after replacing instrument cluster."
Connect VAG 1551 scan tool and initiate OBD of engine electronics using address word "01"

WAUZZZ4DZXN002341: 17 digit VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
AUZ7Z0X0590944: 14 digit identification number of Engine Control Module (ECM)

Using the 14 digit identification number of the ECM, determine the secret number via direct query of the system (like direct query of the radio code).

Initiate On Board Diagnostic (OBD) of the immobilizer (instrument cluster).

Address word for the anti-theft immobilizer: 17

Replacement instrument clusters already have a 14 digit identification number (this is necessary if instrument cluster and ECM are being replaced simultaneously). It is overwritten during adaptation of the instrument cluster to the Engine Control Module (ECM).

NOTE: If a used instrument cluster is being installed, this must first be switched free via a login procedure. See LOGIN PROCEDURE, INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . The secret number must be determined via the 14 digit identification number of the used instrument cluster. Continue as follows after successful login procedure.

Input the previously determined secret number, place a -0- before the 4 digit number (e.g. 01915).
If the secret number is entered incorrectly three times, tester display will indicate "locked 10." This locking time can also be indicated in measuring value block 24 (second position). Adaptation is now locked for 10 minutes. This time is doubled after every third consecutive incorrect attempt, up to a maximum of 255 minutes.

After correct entry of the secret number and following a 4 second waiting period, the vehicle's VIN is indicated on the tester display and the warning lamp in the instrument cluster lights up.

The warning light will go out approx. 2 seconds after successful adaptation and a short confirmation signal will be given (0.5 seconds light off, 0.5 seconds light on, light off).

Adaptation of the immobilizer to the Engine Control Module has been completed.
