Fuel Gauge
CAUTION:
DO NOT allow terminals of fuel gauge sending unit connector to be pushed back into connector sleeve.
- Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit harness connector at fuel tank (accessible through luggage compartment floor). Connect Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM) between fuel gauge sending unit harness connector terminals. Turn ignition on. Voltage should be 9.8-10.3 volts. Turn ignition off. If voltage is not as specified, check for open circuit to fuel gauge sending unit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is as specified, go to next step.NOTE: When testing fuel gauge with Gauge Tester (VW 1301), it may be necessary to tap on instrument cluster glass to aid gauge needle movement.
- Connect Gauge Tester (VW 1301) to fuel gauge sending unit harness connector terminals. See Fig 1. Set tester dial at 280. Turn ignition on and wait for 2 minutes. Fuel gauge should register at right edge of the third mark of the reserve area. If gauge registers as specified, go to next step. If gauge does not register as specified, go to step 4).
- Turn ignition off. Set tester dial at 40. Turn ignition on and wait for 2 minutes. Fuel gauge should register full. If gauge does not register as specified, go to next step. If gauge registers as specified, fuel gauge is okay.
- If gauge does not register as specified, gauge adjustment is necessary. See FUEL GAUGE under ADJUSTMENTS.
