Control module, coding
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 13 other vehicles, including the 2005 Audi allroad, 2004 Audi allroad, 2004 Audi A6, 2003 Audi allroad, and 2003 Audi A6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
- If the correct coding for the vehicle is not displayed, or if the control module has been replaced, the control module must be coded.
- The code table is valid for current chassis forms of the Audi A6 as well as for the off-road version "Allroad".
- Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 or VAG1551 scan tool and select engine electronics control module by entering address word "01". See VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC, TESTING AND INFORMATION SYSTEM VAS5051 OR VAG1551 SCAN TOOL, CONNECTING AND SELECTING FUNCTIONS . Ignition must be switched on.
The display of VAG1551 will show the control module coding (example).
The relevant vehicle coding must be displayed, note coding table. See ENGINE CODE APB: ECM CODING CHART .
Coding variations of Engine Control Module (ECM) for vehicles with engine code APB. Coding variations for vehicles with engine code BEL. See ENGINE CODE BEL: ECM CODING CHART .

NOTE:
- TLEV = Transient Low Emission Vehicles. ESP = Electronic Stability Program
- If the vehicle is equipped with ESP it can be identified at the ESP switch in the instrument cluster.
- Anti Slip Regulation is often abbreviated as "ASR". Electronic Stability Program is abbreviated as "ESP".
- Audi allroad vehicles are always equipped with ESP. On the third digit of the control module coding the Engine Control Module (ECM) is informed about whether a post-switch stage (low range) is installed (characteristic: Switch for post-switch stage at shift handle). This differentiation is required on vehicles with manual transmission. Allroad vehicles with automatic transmission never have a post -switch stage.
- For standard Audi A6, notes regarding post-switch stage (also in code table) can be disregarded.
Indicated code number consists of the following (example):
ENGINE CODING: EXAMPLE
| TLEV (exhaust norm) | 06 | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All wheel drive without Electronic Stability Program (ESP) | 6 | |||
| 6-speed manual transmission | 1 | |||
| Audi A6 | 2 | |||
| Code number | 06 | 6 | 1 | 2 |
NOTE:
TLEV = Transient Low Emission Vehicles. ESP = Electronic Stability Program
If an incorrect coding is displayed:
- Press --> button.
When indicated on display
- Press buttons "07" for the function "Code Control Module" and press Q button to confirm input.
When indicated on display
- Input control module coding according to coding table and press -Q-button to confirm input. See ENGINE CODE APB CHART .
If this message appears, see following Note:
NOTE:
Check in parts catalog whether the correct control module has been installed (part number; possibly the control module cannot be coded). It also possible that an incorrect code number was entered. If necessary repeat coding.
- Press --> button.
Indicated on display
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select function "End Output" and confirm entry with -Q- button.
