Removal - Vehicles With 2.8L FSI, 3.0L MPI, 3.0 TFSI & 3.2L FSI

  1. With ignition switched off, disconnect battery Ground (GND) wire.
  2. Remove right front wheel. Secure brake disc with a wheel bolt.
  3. Loosen the fasteners - 1 and 2 (arrow) and remove the noise insulation, if equipped. See Fig 1.

  4. Remove right driveshaft heat shield - 1 -. See Fig 2.

  5. On vehicles with M/T, disconnect the wires - 3 - and - 4 - from the starter. Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove starter. For the sake of illustration, the figure depicts engine support as removed. See Fig 3.

  6. On vehicles with A/T, detach right driveshaft from transmission flange shaft. Disconnect electrical wires - 2 - and - 3 - from starter. Remove bolts - 1 - and - 4 - and remove starter. For the sake of illustration, the figure depicts engine support as removed. See Fig 4.

  7. To install, reverse removal procedure observing the following:
Torque Specifications

Component Ft. Lbs. (N.m)
Starter-to-transmission 47.9 (65)
Terminal B+-to-starter 11.8 (16)
Heat shield for half shaft-to-tranmission 17.0 (23)
