Rear Shoes: Installation

  1. Lightly coat push rod and brake lever pivot points and contact surfaces with brake assembly lube. Connect tensioning spring to shoe without lever. Insert this shoe in slot of push rod. Install adjusting wedge with lug on wedge facing backing plate. Place shoe with lever in push rod. Attach upper return spring. Hook parking brake cable onto lever. See Fig 1 .
  2. Mount shoes on backing plate with upper ends on wheel cylinder pistons. Attach lower return spring. Fit shoes into lower support on backing plate. Attach adjusting wedge spring to both wedge and shoe.
  3. Install hold-down springs with pins and retainers. Install rear drum. Adjust rear wheel bearing. See WHEEL BEARINGS  under ADJUSTMENTS in this article. Depress brake pedal firmly once in order to set self-adjusting mechanism.
